Just ordered one. Anyone else using this backup on their heli(s)? If so, how is it working out for you?

Works a treat!

Previously I'd been using the older Scorpion guard, it struggled with to keep my VBar and Savox servos running without causing a brownout on my attached Spektrum satelites. No such issues with the Opti Guard.

Glad to hear it's good! I read about the Scorpion BUG having brownout issues in my research. It's also not an "intelligent" device that auto charges on the heli, automatically comes on when the main battery is plugged in, etc. If you forget to manually switch on the BUG before every single flight, you're just carrying around dead weight. If you forget to turn it off, it's dead, dead, dead and will need charging from a separate charger. Can't happen with the LEDs on the Ultraguard. You'll know immediately when you unplug the main battery. I really, really like the LED feature (ordered that, too) that lets you know when the Ultraguard is powering the RX/FBL unit in flight if the BEC croaks. I'll bet it's hard to miss three of those super high intensity CREE type LED emitters. I have a small single cell flashlight with that type of LED and it's blinding with only a single LED. Ultraguard has three LEDs that flash. And, unlike the BUG, you never have to remember to charge it. You can put it in an auto storage mode, too, if you're going to put the heli up for a long while. About 1.5 ounces and under $60 delivered is cheap insurance and peace of mind for a $1000+ heli.

I just ordered a few. It says it first looks at the voltage and then arms at .5 less than that. My first test will be Savox HVs bench tested for 30 seconds powered by a WR and we will see if it kicks in.

I have a 3D heli, I don't understand why it doesn't do 3D.

I'm wondering what happens if BEC voltage drops below the UG's activation point and then the BEC voltage goes back to normal. Do the LEDs keep flashing? Goes the UG go back in standby mode?

My buddy has one of these on his TT E700. I can tell you the LEDs are bright as all get out. To answer you question that LEDs will keep flashing to let you know there was a problem during the flight. Also, the UG will go back into standby.

Yeah, I just got mine installed and the LEDs are extremely bright. They go out and drop off-line when you plug the main battery back in, which is all I could do for a bench test. Seems to work perfectly. I even tested the automatic discharge to storage mode.

I had the same question. Looking forward to the upgrade.

They say to put it in storage mode if you aren't going to fly for a long time like 2+ months. What about people who can fly year round and don't go anywhere near 2 months without flying their UG equipped helis? Those UG batteries are sitting around at full charge all the time. Is that damaging due to increasing internal resistance? If not, then why even have a storage charge mode?

Mine seems to work well on the bench. I have not flown it yet. It will turn on and flash when I move the servos, I assume is is normal? How do you charge on a stand alone charger?

Seems like it just adds extra weight and needless complexity. I just use a quality BEC, and have never had an issue.

It does not seem practical to plan for statistically improbable events.

Not so Wave... I had a bad EC5 connector with enormous resistance and it desoldered itself in flight. This was a few weeks before the UG showed up.

Didn't matter how great the BEC was when your main battery is disconnected in flight.

If you are worried about the weight to that degree, then I would shave weight elsewhere in order to have this little gem onboard.

I am all about the back up plan. I have yet to lose control of a heli and don't want to see it. I have had a lot of success with WR BEC. There was also a guy on HF who had an ESC burn up and it disconnected the BEC.

I have a 3D heli, I don't understand why it doesn't do 3D.

Wave, the massive "extra weight" is 40g. On my 550, it's 1.14% of the total weight of the heli. In other words, negligible. It would be even far less of an issue on a 700. I don't consider plugging in one plug to be "extra complexity", either. If you do, then may God have mercy on you in this hobby.

The one important thing that I have learned in the last 20 years in this hobby, is to keep things simple.

Sorry your thread got off topic, I was merely trying to point out an option.

It is simple. Mount it, plug it in and forget about it. It sits there waiting for that fateful day when you NEED it.
