Ross Dmochowski lives online, where he engages in sometimes serious, sometimes juvenile, sometimes offensive political discussions about President Barack Obama.

But Dmochowski, a 42-year-old tech professional, was unprepared when his online chats resulted in a bomb threat under his name that brought FBI agents to his Livermore home -- and contributed to his getting fired in September from his $120,000-a-year job at Yahoo.

While online harassment is hardly rare, what's surprising about Dmochowski's experience is that even a savvy denizen of the Web world can underestimate how Internet conversations can quickly upend life both at home and at work.
Read the full story - it is interesting

I'm not saying anyone on this forum worship Heinrich Himmler, and I hope no one on this forum is named W. James Hamel, but, you never know.
In February, Dmochowski filed a Livermore police report asserting that a man named W. James Hamel claimed online that he had photos of Dmochowski sexually abusing his daughter and posted that Dmochowski "seriously needs a lead pipe buried in his skull."

Hamel, a database administrator from Navarre, Fla., said in a brief interview that Dmochowski "was stalking me and a number of other people for about a year."

Hamel then hung up and did not respond to messages seeking further comment. Hamel did write a profanity-filled post about the interview on his Google+ account, which is dominated by a photo of Nazi SS chief Heinrich Himmler and other German officers walking past an emaciated soldier inside a World War II prison camp.
In case you want to meet Mr. Hamel:

Mr. Domchowsky got into an online "fight" with some airhead in Fla.

The airhead called the FBI claiming he had information that Domchowsky was planning to plant a bomb someplace.

The airhead also claimed he was in possession of photos of Mr. Domchowsky's daughter being molested by Mr. Domchowsky

Both of which were totally lies.

But, because Mr. Domchowsky used his real name, it became easy for the airhead to make life miserable for Mr Domchowsky (EG: Getting fire, having the FBI investigate him - etc).

Anyone could check for a LinkedIn Profile (look for "Justin Stuart" in or around Plano Texas).
Then, they could look for your Facebook profile and Google+.
From there, it becomes easy to figure out where you work, how many kids you have, if you are currently married, past divorces.
If they were really interested, they could do a public records search in the Plano TX are for bankruptcies, arrests, default judgments, home mortgages, etc.
If you owned a house, they could find your address by doing a public records search for your name on home titles in your area.

One of the underlying tenants of the Internet has always been:
"On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog"

To me, anonymity is important.

I've noticed that whenever anyone does anything significantly bad to necessitate news coverage, like the guy who shot the people at Ft. Hood a couple of days ago, within a few minutes of the event every news agency worldwide from AlJazerra to Zite has already pulled up the person's background including their FaceBook page and has their address, pictures, marriage/divorce, property owned, criminal background, and everything else about them. It's not like you need to be the FBI anymore to learn everything about someone. So I think that unless you try really hard to use TOR browsers and never have an account anywhere online, people who are determined to find you will find you. Might as well accept it.

AlJazerra to Zite
I guess I would have started with "Associated Press (AP)" and "Fox News".

Your lack of anonymity is for you to decide.

I am sure the NSA and the FBI are glad you take that view.
After all, what do you have to hide?
I mean, theoretically, if there was an incident in the Plano area where an RPV / UAV were used, they would love to talk to you regarding your association with an online forum about RC Helicopters and UAV - just to clear things up of course.
You wouldn't be a suspect or anything like that. They just want to talk.

I have a different view.
Not because I would ever think of trying to hide anything from the NSA or the FBI (heaven forbid!) and definitely not because I might be inclined to commit mass murder (for the benefit of the NSA or FBI - I don't own a gun), but mainly because I am aware of the underlying nature of airheads and their propensity to be stupid, cowardly and afraid.

Believe 1/2 of what you see and none of what you hear.

I thought the NSA already reads all of our emails and text messages and listens to our cell phone calls? Maybe a person does not read them exactly, but a computer screens them for words like "terrorism" or something to turn up. And I'm pretty sure every Google search that I have ever conducted is tracked. If Google and Amazon can send me links to "cordless toothbrushes" for weeks after I make the search, then what's to think all of that is not recorded in some database somewhere? Besides, Google requires you to log in for pretty much anything, so my computer has been logged into my Google account for months.
