Hello,
I know IRCHA is down the road a bit, but I did want everyone to know that we WILL be having the 2014 Auto Contest. I would like to thank Ray Stacy for running the contest in the past and with his blessing and the approval of the IRCHA board I am going to pick up in his retirement.

Details, official flyer and prizes will be announced as we finalize everything. (Yes, we already have some great prizes allocated for the event!!!)

Thank you,
-Ryan Witchey

I'm planning on being there. Thanks for taking this on Ryan I know it's a significant time and effort, tough with a family. Between this and the sportsman class speed runs I'm really looking forward to these events for 2014.

What is the autorotation contest going to be judged on?

Tricks during the autorotation or accuracy of landing or both?

Hopefully It stays the same as the past couple years.. Either way it is one event that is always exciting to compete in or watch.

Closest to the "PIN" with extra points for doing 50% of the auto inverted.

I hear Ryan has acquired a RTF Henseliet new 3 bladed machine for first place, so if you win the auto contest you can you run over across the way and win speed too! Haha.. Go Ryan!

(Disclaimer.. Ryan knows I am having fun with him.. there is no 3 bladed monster as a prize!)

Contest details are being worked out with the volunteers I have right now.

For now, some of the preliminary thoughts are as follows:

1) All volunteers (read judges), including myself, want to participate in the contest. The only way to do this is to have an easily measured system so that if any volunteer wants to participate they can and the other two judges can score for them.

BTW- the ONLY way I was able to have enthusiastic judges help me was to have a system where they could also compete fairly.

2) Everyone can compete. I am going to use the honor system here. If you have a blade sponsor and you win a set of blades, pass them along to the next guy. Same goes for other areas of sponsorship. If you choose to keep them, that is up to you, we won't police that, but just do what you feel is right.

3) Very raw ideas on the competition:

a) Multiple events. Not too many to cause it to be long and drawn out, but enough to make it interesting and maybe level the playing field a little.

b) Spot event will be to the exact spot, you can slide, skid or wiggle to the spot. We aren't going to be critical how you get there.

c) There could be multiple landing spots of different sizes. If you don't make one, you might be able to make the other ones. The score would be according to the size of the circle. Large circle fewer points, the quarter size circle is the most points. Once again I am just shooting off the cuff right now.

d) Probably going to have some form of duration autorotation.

e) Yes, you will get extras for aerobatics autos. What exactly is to be determined.

Anyone can participate!

Just because you can smack fly doesn't mean you can literally stop on dime from 400 feet!

Come on Manny, all can play on Ryan's sandbox.
Well sponsored pilots can respectfully pass on the prizes like many have done in the past.

Is a fun event, let the boys play.

The speed contest uses an altimiter. You could do the same thing for the auto duration contest. When the altimiter shows the desired height they have to cut throttle within 3 seconds or something?

The speed contest altimeter is not real time observable.

There are several devices on the market today that limit altitude by disabling the throttle above a certain threshold. These are used in ALES R/C glider competitions.

Here is one example that is adjustable from 50-9999ft.

The speed contest altimeter is not real time observable.
Correct.

It was a Jetti logger, used to verify the guys did not get higher than the imposed 600ft limit. It records the highest altitude during the flight.

It could be used in reverse to make sure your guys go above 400ft or whichever altitude you desire. The problem is since you have to climb 3 times, it does not resets in between on its own.

However, This will work if we add the telemetry to it. The whole thing is very small and could be velcro to the helis before they go up for their round. The CD or a Judge can hold the dashboard/Rx and read the altitude real time.

Just a thought.

Duration usually isn't set on a height. Typically it is either a timed climb out or climb as high as you are comfortable.

We are doing a timed in the name.of keeping things moving along and keeping it a little more even keel.
