If you have a 550 size bird, would you consider a 500 size or is there not enough difference between them to even bother. Is crash cost much different between the two?

There is a size difference, but if you are use to the 550 size, I don't think you will have much trouble with the 500.
Of course cost will be a little less for blades and most other parts.

I have 2 550's and a 700E. I thought about getting a 500 but decided against it for a few reasons, the biggest reason was batteries. My 550's and 700E use the same packs(6s 5000mah) so I can charge all 12 of them at the same time with parallel boards. If I got the 500, I would have to get new packs and have to charge them separately.

Remember to keep everything balanced!

I like the Protos 500. A little hot rod that I like better than the 450 size helis. But still small enough to be different than the 550-600 size. Main blade and battery costs are the big crash cost difference between all the sizes. The larger the heli the larger the costs.

Blades; what goes around, comes around!

I have both sizes and seem too reach for the 500 more often, I tend to push my flying constantly and the lipo and crash costs are cheaper. The 550 has more presence and hang time though, but the 500 is quicker.

What size blades for the 500? it is a strange class

The Protos and T500 use 425mm

The Goblin uses 500mm

There is a big difference between a 550 vs a Protos & T500, in size and cost.

I have a T550 and T500, the T500 gets flown a lot more.

CAUTION - my posts are based on my experiences, yours may be different.
