New to the 7HV - some questions
I just picked up my first 700 size helicopter - wholly sh!t this thing is BIG!

Q1 - I plan to use my CC Edge 160HV ESC. leaning towards a KDE 495, but lots of folks here are Jones'n for the Scorpion ultimate. The Scorpions run so hot, that is my only worry...heat = bad. Scorpion or KDE?

Q2 - I can see myself losing the cotter pin that holds the battery lock pin. Anyone have solutions or alternatives to this? BTW my search function always give me this response "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.," I did try searching first.

Q3 - I see some people are using a small grounding wire. Can I order this pre-made or does everyone just make it? I can easily make one, but buying ring terminals, wire, etc...might as just buy one pre-made.

Q4 - There is too much slop in the tail rod through the guides. The manual shows shrink tubing (part 85-0002) but I cannot find these on the Prostar website. Any ideas where or how to get some of this hard shrink tubing or does anyone have another work-around?

Thanks

I have my pin tied to the frame with some braided fishing line.
The 7hv usually only has 1 pushrod guide but I may add another too.
The hard tube goes over the balllinks. The stuff at the guides appears to be normal shrink wrap on mine.

Scott 1115,

I have some answers for you...

Q1: The Scorpions do run hotter, but are designed with magnets that seem to tolerate the temp without a heat soak effect. In other words, should be fine, even as hot as they run.

Q2: I have a couple of solutions for the cotter AND battery pin. First, I cut a piece of 16 ga hook-up wire, and soldered an eyelet on each end. One end, I captured under one of the bolts on the side of the frame which attaches the ESC tray. The other end, I cut a piece of heat shrink to fit over the eyelet. Then, I poked a small hole in the shrink centered on the eyelet, and pushed the cotter pin through it. It's always retained this way. Never lost it. Second, I used a small dab of JB Weld epoxy to attach a small magnet to the side of the frame. When I extract the battery tray retaining pin between pack changes, I put the pin on the magnet. This is very handy.

Q3: I am unaware of a pre-made ground wire. I made mine just like I did the cotter retaining lanyard. Drilled a hole in the boom on the bottom, and attached one end of the wire there, and the other end is under the head of one of the motor mount bolts. Has always worked well as best I can tell. I certainly measure continuity from the tail shaft to the motor mount, and have never experienced an ESD reset of my Vbar system.

Q4: There was no heat shrink tube in my kit. About any heat shrink will work, but I recommend the PTFE heat shrink sleeve which Synergy sells to fit on the rod through the rod guide. Check it here:

Be sure to let me know if there are any other questions. I am here to help.

Rob-

Thank you. I appreciate it. I decided to go with KDE motor - nothing but good talk at my club from the guys that have them. I like your solutions for the battery pin. I have 18ga wire around, so I will use that to make the ground wire.

I have to figure out how to lay out the wiring for the batteries to the ESC. Most likely I will have the batteries face one another so I do not have to lengthen one batteries' leads; and have the ESC wires run down the side of the frame rather than forward. What do others do?

Yes!... That's what a lot of guys do !... Do not extend your batt cables!... ESC cables to the sides, batt cables coming out of the sides!... I now use a 12s Stick, the ESC cables still reach to the batt cables at the front!Demon in ME... Kosmik = Kostme
