Sorry... not aimed at you... aimed at the patent system. Yes, they are within their rights to pursue their IP. It is hard to do though. And darn near impossible for a garage inventor. A lot of big companies can afford to rush to the patent office to be first in line when it is not even their idea or work.

Have you ever tried to file a patent? Lets face it most ideas are improvements on existing products.

Sorry, this is getting a little off course, but if they got the patents, I'm curious as to what was patented? Again, the idea of using spread spectrum to do r/c was described to me back 25+ years ago. I'm curious as to what exactly was patented? steve.

Steve,
What was patented was in the patent links above. They have similar claims granted by the European Patent Office as well so has been scrutinized there as well.

Heli-splatter,
I didn't take it as a shot. And, I agree, it is costly to get a patent and even more costly to enforce them.
Then there are a lot of annoying uses. Like some will apply for frivolous claims and drag them out for years and years knowing that the whole time it's costing their competitors time and money to have their lawyers study those applications. All just to drive the costs up so they can keep their prices high. This is unethical and illegal as well but very difficult to prove. Some do it all the time. There are always bad apples.
Overall, though, I strongly agree with what the process is supposed to do.

I little bit on the of history on Horizon Hobbies.

1: Started out as Circus Hobbies owned by Mr Bill Bennet owner of Circus Circus Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Circus Hobbies was the original importers of Kalt Helicopters and JR Radios.

2: Circus Hobbies moved to Campaign IL to be centrally located for better shipping and customer service. Shipping to and from Las Vegas was horrible. Along with the move Circus Hobbies name was changed to Hobby Dynamics.

3: Several years later Mr Bennet sold Hobby Dynamics and the name was changed to Horizon Hobbies.

So don't worry Horizon Hobby will survive new owners. Maybe new investors will give them the capital to make them bigger and better.

You can get your JR radio serviced at JR Americas in Campaign IL.

I love horizons service and have bought tons of crap because of it.

If the service changes, I will move on to the provider of the best service.

I hope they only change for the better of the consumer.

Don't matter to me.

I don't buy nothing Horizon Hobby. I've been burned so many times by their various brands over the years. Including Eflite Blade helis, Pro Boat, Spektrum, Dynamite, etc.

There is a common thread of inferior quality through all these brands and its no damn wonder that they have come to this juncture. Their products have cost me more friggin money in failures than I care to admit.

If JR were smart they would find a way to eject, because JR is the only thing salvageable out of the entire chair. I almost bought an NEX until I realized it was Horizon. No chance!

Well, for all they've done for this industry, they certainly don't deserve disrespect...IMO.

They changed the game...and kept it affordable for most. That's rare from most companies.

To add some missing info on Frank's post, here is Horizon's history as copied from their web site.

1985: The Beginning
Founder, Rick Stephens, along with a handful of his family and industry professionals, opened Horizon Hobby in October of 1985. Their "can do" attitude and exceptional care for the customer quickly make Horizon one of the most popular wholesale RC distributors in North America.

1986: The First Expansion
A second distribution center is opened in Paso Robles, California, allowing Horizon to service retailers west of the Rockies more quickly and efficiently.

1992: Horizon Acquires Exclusive Brands and Begins Development of its Own
Horizon purchases Hobby Dynamics and gains exclusive distribution rights to several premier RC brands. At the same time it begins development of its own RC brands.

1998: Horizon Reaches Out Directly to Hobby Consumers
With the Internet and e-commerce creating new ways to reach hobby consumers, Horizon acquires catalog retailer, Indy RC, and the Consumer Division is born.

2002: The Ontario, California Facility Opens
The Paso Robles distribution center is moved to a larger facility in Ontario, California to better serve our customers and help support the explosive growth of our proprietary products.

2004: Horizon Establishes a Presence in Europe
Seeking a stronger foothold in Europe, Horizon acquires Helger Racing which becomes Horizon Hobby UK Ltd.

2006: Horizon Becomes Employee-Owned
Horizon Hobby employees become the owners with the introduction of the Employee Stock Ownership Plan.

2008: European Operations Expand
Horizon acquires German distributor JSB which becomes Horizon Hobby Deutschland GmbH. About the same time Horizon Hobby opens an office in Paris, France.

2011: Horizon Establishes a Presence in China
Horizon Hobby China was established as a retail sales office and web business based in Shanghai. We have a sales office with an experiential center, and can provide after-sales service from our Shanghai office as well. Our mission is to "Help the Chinese consumers discover they can have fun with hobbies." We will serve consumers directly in the emerging Chinese market.

I remember in the 90's when Indy RC was bought and combined with Horizon Hobby. That is when Horizon started becoming better known through mailed out catalogs and use of the internet. I started out with JR radios, Hobby Dynamics planes, and Fox engines.

I have been wondering for a long time how Horizon, and Great Planes, are doing as Hobby King gets bigger and bigger...The cheap prices and worldwide reach of Hobby King are changing the RC market very quickly...and I wonder if Horizon saw the writing on the wall. They certainly have to be taking a HUGE hit in their market share from Hobby King.

I have seen the Circus Hobbies, Hobby Dynamics then Horizon Hobbies sales/mergers as a JR & Kalt Heli factory pilot. Each transaction made them a stronger player in this hobby. Horizon Hobby will survive this change, an JR Americas will be focused on JR radio sales in the US.Ole FD AMA4500 Team JR & Team Cool Power
