Not that I am a big Horizon fan, but this does not sound like good news. Like every one else on here said, you don't go to an investment firm to better your self unless the bottom line is what you are looking at. We all know what that means. This is not good news at all.trex 700fbl cal30,minititan,, trx600fbl,trex250,logo 500,Velocity N2

It's been my opinion for the longest time that JR stuff is overpriced, and Spektrum stuff is lesser quality, but with the excellent customer service you get from Horizon Hobby, it's worth it. For example, I paid some $40 for a pair of green JR ball link pliers. I could have bought the equivalent Top Flite pliers from Tower for about $20, but I knew with the unquestionable lifetime warranty I would get from Horizon made the $40 ball link pliers the better value. But now who knows what will happen when the tip on those ball link pliers eventually breaks? Will they replace them without question as has been done in the past? Or will they ask for my recept and tell me I only had a 90 day warranty? I'm sure Hobbico/Tower Hobbies is really happy to learn of this news.

Not all bad....
While moves like this always seem to lead to doubt and uncertainty, I will be the optimist here hope that is brings brings positive change to the hobby.

The investment firms involved seem to have a primary focus of plastic injection molding. If indeed Horizon is looking or needing to separate themselves from JR supplying the shells and parts for their radios and aircraft, then this could be a move to get their parts more locally and in the US..

On the other side, these investment firms keep buying little plastics shops and need to create a demand for their product. Hence Horizon.

I will say tho, If the investment firms are smart enuf to keep the current management and customer service focus we have now, Horizon will continue to thrive.

Justin,
That is the quandary, I'd bet a ton that your ball link pliers will be one of the victims here and by that I mean that the great service that HH has offered in the past is going to go by the way side. Watch and see if their guarantee process is changed dramatically.

Horizon Hobbies, if you are reading this thread:

If the purpose of this new holding company is to help you to get more involved in the "toy" market by placing your BNF line of products into WalMart and Target stores, then more power to you.

But please leave the "profession" line of products, and the unconditional warranty that accompanies them, alone. The ONLY thing that differentiates Futaba and OS from JR/Spektrum and YS/Evolution is the fact that with the Horizon Hobbies line of products, they come with very generous warranty support, and with the Tower Hobbies/Hobbico line of products, you get totally screwed over by Hobby Services every time you send anything in for servicing. Please, Horizon, don't screw up that part of your business model.

Guys, nothing stays the same in this world. And no business can stand still. Sooner or later change happens for good or bad.
There could be many reasons this is happening and there can be many outcomes from it.
Some of my thoughts:
1) After many years of hard work, the owners/employees want to collect their rewards and move on. Giving someone else the opportunity and future.
2) Under today's conditions, the present owners have taken the company as far as they can and the company needs to grow or die.
So, new money and management.
3) The hobby has been changing and Horizon needs to change. Sometime this will only happen with new money and management.

The hobby has been changing for decades and recently has experienced rapid growth. This may have formed a bubble. It has expanded in the direction of a sport and main stream toys. This has been good for growth but may change how we are treated as hobbyists.
Just remember that change and voids brings opportunity to new people and companies.

If it's a holding company or investment group, I promise their ultimate interest is not in running a hobby vendor/distributor. These groups are in it for profit, which usually means buy / streamline to increase bottom line profitability / sell (either to the public via stock shares or to a corporation as a complete entity.)

It's normally a 3-5 year plan. There will be cycle of capital investment and improvements, then a lean period where the focus will be on controlling expenses. The combination of limited capital spending with low expense numbers make the bottom line profitability number look great. Right before the sale, it's not uncommon to see a few key executives jump ship due to not making bonus targets.

The new owner has a good year or two and then has to dump all the money that wasn't being spent back into their new company to improve the MHE, buildings, and fleet and acquire high caliber management staff.

Fortunes are made by understanding how to surf these corporate waves, but I agree that it will certainly impact the customers in both the short and long term. How or how much will depend on how much value the holding company puts on the reputation that HH has built. If their ultimate goal is an AirHogs type retail presence, I'm afraid for all of us.

As a consumer - for me, what differentiates Horizon from almost all of their competition is their genuine attempt at keeping the customer happy. This of course comes at an expense to them, be it an overtly incurred expense. However, it is this business practice, and this alone that keeps me coming back as a customer. There are of course other product lines that I can easily substitue for Horizon exclusive products. If that "customer care" practice were to go away, then I believe they would simply put themselves on a level playing ground with their competition.

Now whether or not that potential loss of customers is going to have a substantial impact on their bottom line is something that they will surely ponder and evaluate. I'm guessing that we (the heli community) are just a small part of their overall business. They may make up a potential loss in other areas - and maybe even improve their bottom line. All speculation however.

And of course, this only matters if they do indeed change their business practices. I guess all we can do is wish them (and us) luck and see how it plays out ...

Sounds like the current owners wanted out and the CEO Joe Ambrose has a family member, Jacob Ambrose, in an investment group who apparently saw a good investment and a great return opportunity. Just my thoughts.

I bet the first thing to go is all the "free"* service work we've been getting for so many years. Once an investment type sees that, they'll hit the roof and we'll start getting bills.

We will just have to wait and see. I do wish them luck and the ability to make intelligent decisions not based 100% on the bottom line.

- John

* I put free in quotes because, really, we are paying for it. Nothing is free. It's just spread across all the product costs.

So then what do we know about Jeti? I like the tray-shaped radio with the switches on the end of the sticks. If good customer service is over for Spektrum stuff, I seriously doubt I would buy another Spektrum radio.Avant RC

I think it's terrible.
How dare they, try and cash in on profit.??
I bought a second hand DX6I to buddy box my two boy's 3 years ago, and they drop it frequently, so far they have broken 3 switches, when i call up H/H they send out the switches FOC, posted!
A few weeks ago my ten year old, spilled hot custard over the dx6 whilst eating his spotted dick, and the thumb roller stopped working!!
I WAS NOT HAPPY.
I called up HH, and they wanted £4.35 for a replacement thumb roller switch and board.?
I TELL YOU, I WAS FUMING, it was only the fact they didnt charge me postage that kept me from totally loosing it.

I really believe that any company that produces top notch products, that the consumer want's, with a faultless service back up.

Should be doing it for free.

Just my opinion.
