Learned a lesson today. I was flying my very old (several years old) Raptor 50 V2 today. I always do a good pre and post flight check. But guess what I never have checked...gyro tape!

While flying my Raptor, like I stole it, I noticed a few uncommanded tail movements. So I slowed the bird down to bring her in for a check up. As I was descending, the tail began to wag back and forth more and more violently each successive wag. Then about 15 to 20 feet from the runway she broke into an uncontrollable left hand piro. OH BOY! I quickly hit throttle hold and tried to decrease the piro before I lost too much head speed and do an auto. I safely got her to the ground and saw my Futaba 401 hanging down by the tail boom. The double sided tape (as old as the helicopter) finally became dry and brittle and came apart in flight.

So I guess I will not only try to have a secondary form of securement on all my gyros (yes Im old school), like a velcro strap (have them on some helis not all), but change the tape maybe every flying season.

Just thought I would share.

Big happy for me...not a scratch on the old girl!!

The funny part of these kind of stories is that you may think that you have checked everything but when you go up it is always that one thing that you didn't look at.
Last week I took out my Velocity n2 and gave it a once over and proceeded to fly and about a minute into the flight I hear this very loud snap and down it came. Get up to it and there is a ball missing out of the swash. So no matter how hard you try there are times when sh** happens.
The lesson here is if you bird sits for a month or more without you flying it make sure that you give it a very good look at before you fly it. Amazing how locktite at times just gives up the fight.

I will normally put a Velcro type strap lightly over the gyro.. being careful not to compress the gyro tape..just an added way of preventing it falling off

shut up and fly

Its the tape
Futaba gyro tape is JUNK, the foam splits down the middle leaving the stuck pieces on the heli and gyro itself.

Never use that stuff, its done the same to me. Instead use 3M grey tape with red backing, #411 I believe, and you can get it at Walmart. That stuff will never come off like that.

Now imagine if that was a FBL gyro
That is why I don't use that tape any more. I use the solid stuff now and I never worry, I check, but never worry.

And just a FYI for those, like myself, that never go to Walmart...you can get it lots of places.

I think it's called outdoor mounting tape, Lowes, Home Depot, maybe local hardware store.

Sticks well, super easy to remove, and removes cleanly. I replace it every year and never worry. I usually have to pull it off with a little force, I replace it as yearly maintenance.

3M Outside Double Sided Tape
In laughingstill's pic.. the one to the far left is what I use.. same that rbort mentioned...
It is for outside use, grey with a red backer... tough stuff and works great..
And as you can see it is available even at WalMart... I never even thought of getting it there.. I have always grabbed it a Lowe's.. mostly because they give a 10% discount if you are active duty or a vet too!!!!

Grab a roll and you will not need a strap over your gyro!!!!

That is exactly the one, #411 and with pictures of house number plates on the package.

That stuff will never come off. You have to wrestle your flybarless unit off with it, the stuff is crazy strong.

Something just struck me as funny.lol...

Look at my work table under that tape.
That's after a few years with nitro...and I do wash that towel about once a month.

This was a few years ago when I was a brand newbie and starting with a Trex 500.

I literally never use the word literally right.
