my guess is early on the Germans (who pioneered RC heli) were just mimicing full size. But, at some point (as alluded to earlier) it was just easier to adapt the existing nitro engines which run CCW for use.

think about it: when the motor runs CCW, and you pinion it up to a main gear the result is a CW running head.

in the case of the Henseleit 3DNT, that is a belt-run motor-to-main hookup. using a standard CCW running engine will result in a CCW head. To make the head spin CW you need a reverse-running (CW running) engine, which they came with.

Many scale model helicopter rotors spin CCW because the full size helicopter rotor rotation is CCW, and they're trying to be, well, scale
