Hi all, I'm from the UK on a business trip and spending this weekend in Chicago. Are there any good heli/RC shops in the Chicago area? Any clubs? Just wondering if I can get a fix while I'm here

There used to be a good heli/hobby shop but it is only a glimmer of its former self. Used to look forward to making a trip there but anymore I walk in and walk back out. No helis in stock other than maybe a 450 or smaller. No nitro anymore. Not worth the trip. The best hobby shop in the Chicagoland area is clear on the southwest side IMHO but even then not alot of heli stuff.

It is a shame considering the size of the Chicago area.

Yea, and while you are there you can help him find his lost whirly-bird, he's been a little busy lately.

Al's Hobby shop in Elmhurst used to be a heli mecca in the 90's.

Venture hobbies just closed.

Things have changed but there are still plenty of heli flyer's in the Chicago area.

I will second that. Al's Hobby shop is the place to go, though they may be closed on Sunday.

At the very least they will know the local heli clubs.

What does Al's carry nowadays? I use to drive over 90 minutes each way to shop at Al's until their Heli department nearly dried up. Have not visited in years.

I think they are down to the small helis and I do remember seeing a raptor kit last time I was there. There was someone called ?Cindy who worked there once upon a time, who was into helis. Don't know if she's still there. Was quite knowledgeable.

I go there mainly for nostalgic reasons when I'm in the Chicago area, and to pick up a copy of the British heli mags. They mainly seem to have someone or another showing their cars/trucks.

That seems to be the case for a lot of shops that I've been to over the years, the heli department is only one employee deep, loose that employee and there goes the helis in that shop.

I did not want to mention any names in my earlier post but as mentioned, Al's used to be a great place. Felt like a kid in a candy store there many years ago. One could hardly move around in there as they had so much stuff, usually always walked out with a lot of good stuff. Anymore, for me at least it is not worth my time. Unless you are a car guy their selection of flying stuff is pretty miniscule other than than the usual foamy stuff.

Leisure Time Hobbies down in Joliet I found seems to be pretty well stocked, not much for helis although they do have a few things.

Yea...my LHS is like that too...dried up heli's. They have the small indoor heli's and micro quads. They used to carry the "flavor of the month" heli's.
I used to enjoy driving a couple of hours to Al's to go shopping, they had all kinds of stuff, it was hard to walk around everything they had. But now, I'll stop in if I'm in the area.

not meaning to hijack the thread, but my dad and I used to drive out to Als years and years ago as well I remember so much in the way of RC cars, trucks, planks, and yes even helicopters hanging from the ceiling. Now theres zip zilch nada...So here is the question, if the was a rc helicopter based shop in the Chicago burbs would you other chi-town guys go there. I know I would I mean like years ago a one stop shop. No more "sorry I can order it" have it in a few days, I mean a one stop shop... I am I nuts for wanting this?
Whats stoping that guy or gal from doing it, again would you guys go there?

Distributors that undersell hobby shops directly to consumers, high volume minimum inventory order demands, eBay, online vendors, Chinese market invasion, and five new Heli releases a month keep brick and mortar hobby shops from succeeding. Now the American dollar exchange rate is another dreadful contribution to this topic. Don't forget the impact coming soon from Obamacare and pension cuts.

Enjoy things that money can buy IF you don't lose the things money can't buy.

well alot of the major distibuters are wiseing up. From what I have seen must major dist. dont have minimums and if there are minimums they are not that bad. Yes there is a lot of new helicopters released, but that does not mean they are all worthy of a brick and morter. The online guys, most have brick and morter stores right? So why cant the windy city suburbs have a shop of our own. Would you go TYLER you did not answer that question?
