Write up a contract next time, problem solved. Shouldve charged at least $100/hr. Even for our smallest machine(mini x). Its $120/hr. Cat 345c with an oversized 4.5yd bucket is just a tad more especially when ya have 10 feedin forty 30T rock trucks

If you only have to bend over once to pick it up it's a good landing.

real simple fix.
tell him he either pays you what you think if fair for the job- or you are the one with the excavator and you can pull out all of your hard work and leave him with 10' deep ditches in his back yard.
Also you should not be doing this work for 75% off what you would have to pay someone to do it.

Side question what is his political views? This can give you some reasoning why he thinks everyone should do things free for him.

I actually thought for a while to go knock on his door and explain how I could reverse engineer his yard.

Around here you would pay 115-125 an hour plus the equipment move which is normally 100 extra. When I get my friends to do work for me or vice versa I insist on them pricing it like they would for anyone else. I don't want a break on the price because when the tables are turned I also don't want to work for free.

I would rather be in a boat, with a drink on the rocks, then in the drink, with a boat on the rocks!

do you have any projects that he can help you with in your yard and put in equal time helping you?
and just pay for the diesel fuel and maintenance reserve you used while doing digging work for him.
That is the very least he should pay- if he don't believe you tell him to call a local excavator and ask what his prices would be- my guess is after that he should realize how cheep he got buy.

Next time get things in writing.

I would like to dig a pool, how about you, as a friend, come down and dig it for me ?
.
Anyway, a 1000 is really letting him off cheap. Hope you get the rest soon.
.
EDIT: When I go to the link you provide I get a huge list of pictures, which ones are the french drain project ?

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

Send him an invoice detailing all the work provided and the current, going rates for the labor etc.
Add all the cost. Let's say it's $5,000
On bottom, on the last line write "Neighbor Discount - $4,000"
Total cost $1,000.

Once he sees how much the work could have cost him he'll feel real bad and still won't give you any money. But at least he'll feel bad.
