I learned that a certain manufacturer has started to sell a pulse jet for $99. Who is going to be the first to strap one to the bottom of the speed helicopter? I have never seen one of these in action, but I understand they are extremely loud which is why they are banned at most AMA fields. But for $99, it seems like it might be fun to play with. What do you think?

Most people that have posted about them have negative comments because of the noise. The posts were on the site that sells them!

That being said, I think it would be fun to try it out!

I would love to get - even if the only reason was to turn gasoline into annoying noise! hahaha

A valved pulse jet is a very old technology. It was around long before the turbine jet engines we see on aircraft today. There is no throttle control. It uses a steel "valve" which is what forms the comubstion chamber, but only lasts a very short time before it breaks. The valved pulse jet was used to set world speed records for model aircraft in the 1950's, but then they were banned because they were too noisy and too dangerous. As a result, people stopped manufacturing them. But now they are back. I want one.

This guy explains the valved pulse jet pretty well:

Funny I just got off of the site that is selling these things. I was just looking at it and wondering what slab could take this thing, but after looking at the vid of those two guys running that thing I guess that any foamy is out of the question.

Still I wonder just how much thrust that particular pulse jet that Hobby King is selling is putting out. It would be nice to know so you could pick something to put it on.

That does not sound like a lot of thrust, but if you put it on the right plane it would be a blast...literally.

Many years ago i found an old Popluar Mechanics magazine that had a write up of building one of these pulse engines with a WD40 can and a piece of tail pipe. Sounded like a great project for my highschool metals class. Looked good and ran for a second. The fireball that ensued was awesome! Only got a C for the project as it was "completed."

The hk one might get me out flying again, if they are ever in stock!

Back when I was in high school in the mid 60s, a guy that I knew had set up one of these things in a stunt control line model. The only time I saw it run and fly, I got behind the biggest tree I could find at the park, and held my hands over my ears the entire flight.

However, with that having been said, he did a complete AMA stunt pattern that was in effect at the time. The timing worked out perfectly, as within about a lap, maybe two after he did his last maneuver, the motor quit and he landed.

That one flight is the only time I have ever seen one of these things run, and I still remember it like it was yesterday. I don't recall the tail pipe glowing red, but maybe if you get it moving the airflow passing over it will cool it down.

Here is a valveless pulse jet engine. Looks like it practically reaches meltdown temperature.

Love the red hot color of the metal, as the pulse jet "warms up".
