Background:

I've owned this helicopter since it was new and took great care in the initial build/setup. This issue has been around since it was new. I've set up many helicopters and I can not for the life of me track down this issue.

Heli/equipment:

Trex 550E DFC
bls451's on cyclic, bls251 on tail
CC edge 120HV, WR super BEC, mini vbar blueline
6s 5300mah batteries

The issue:

On pitch pump, tail goes wild for a few seconds, as in it hunts like crazy then settles down, helicopter also makes some noise. Everything else is normal, and the helicopter has been through many hard flights without failure. Collective intensive maneuvers will get that issue to manifest, like during tic tocs.

This occurs with the stock 520's and 606 blades I run at head speeds from 1800 to 2400.

things I've tried:

-rebuild head/tail
-checked every bearing on helicopter including OWB, and motor bearings
-messed with tail gyro gain from low to high
-changed vbar settings around
-spool up full speed on ground (no main/tail blades) and the issue doesn't occur during pitch pump or manually loading the motor.
-changed tail drive to older faster ratio
-asked all my buddies at the field to look at it

After all this I still can't find the issue. Now I'm looking for some tips/ideas from my RR buddies!

---

here's the crappy video, make sure you view it in 1080p, you probably won't see the tail wag but you can hear the noise. I do some pitch pumps after takeoff and some tic tocs about half way through.

EDIT: PROBLEM SOLVED, issue was the governor on the vbar, it was trying to change motor speed too quickly. Changing the ESC setting to take slower commands fixed it.

Kinda sounds like the noise my e7 is making. I think I have it figured out to be the gain on the esc gov. I raised the gain and the noise got a little worse like it is hunting or wagging if you think of it like your tail gain, and you could see on the logging where the rpm was more erratic like the sound. I didn't have any more time to go back down on the gain and test but I think that is it. And if the gov is acting up it can cause the tail to be off too.

If your even running the castle gov?

Also check the boom supports. I had a violent tail wag on a 600e that I could not find. My friend noticed one of the boom support ends was a little loose. Re-glued it and the problem went away.

Other things to check include the gov gain as Pete said above as well as the vbar cyclic gain and tail gain.

Thanks for the tips, I just checked the boom supports and they're rock solid. I've never run this helicopter on throttle curves only though, so I'll try that next time for sure, that way we take the whole gov out of the loop.
