storing in a sealed container is a bad idea the lipos will produce their own oxygen as the gasses are released.

thinking of making a relay circuit to turn on a fan when smoke detector goes off to exhaust the smoke outside.

Excellent idea but if you do that make sure of two things:
(1) Make sure you vent vertically
(2) Make sure the vent is fire resistant or even fire proof. If not the heat and gasses will go into the attic space and then the risk of losing your whole house is very real.

First off, DO NOT VENT THIS INTO YOUR ATTIC, outside please.
In fact you shouldn't even vent a bathroom exhaust fan into your attic.

3" galv flue pipe should work nicely, and with the proper fan you could run it horizontally as long as you don't go too far.

I'll just continue to keep mine on a proper shelf in the attached garage, with nothing combustible nearby.

Use a 4x8x16 solid block for a lid and bottom and a concrete block becomes a great lipo storage "safe." You can fit three 4000mAh 6S or two 5000+mAh 6S in each cell.

I have never seen or read about a lipo spontaneously combusting that did not involve user error earlier in its life. Every case I recall was either someone trying to save a pack with one or more bad cells or a previously crashed pack that was still being used.

+1 a perfect condition lipo is as safe as a baby.
I had a damaged lipo that I kept in a can to see if it would combust on it's own, it never did

I was thinking of using a metal dryer vent hose.
and was thinking using a fan but decided against it( as it may help the fire).
my box would have a fire stop and built similar to how wood stoves are made.
or I just may use cinder blocks and patio stones seems easier

Its mostly holdover from the early days of lipo.there were several things going on that caused a lot of fires. One was people charging on chargers without a specific lipo program.Todays chargers even the cheap ones are so much better and far ahead. Most will now detect issues and shut down well before any serious issues.

2)Some guys were NOT balance charging and add this to no proper lipo firmware and, well you get it.

3)lipos themselves, 20C was once considered really high discharge.

Today the lipo chemistry is more robust and stable and chargers keep lipos perfectly balanced and show any flaws almost immediately, just much safer

a healthy undamaged lipo is just as safe as any other chemistry.yes because of its form(no hard case)it is more vulnerable to damage. But there is nothing to fear from a lipo sitting at storage.....they just do not ignite for no reason.

Consider all the airhogs and cox planes/helis out there.they mostly use a 1 or 2 cell lipo.they are given to 5 year olds and abused.they are charged with the cheapest pos chargers you can get, and how often do we hear of an airhog bursting into flames.

Now consider a 40-65C lipo being balance charged since day one on a high end charger

But they do ignite from damage sustained weeks before the actual combustion.

It happens...Not often but it happens.
Why are people so dead set on denying that?

They are safe most of the time...the vast majority of users will never see a problem.

Some of the people in this thread will...that is ALMOST guaranteed.
Maybe not a full on fire. But some kind of issue that can be very dangerous.

Human error is the cause of most problems.
100% of the lipos in use are being used by HUMANS.

Be careful...Take precautions...Is that really too much to ask?

Millions and millions of guns will not be involved in fatal accidents this week...Is that a reason to throw caution to the wind?
I have never seen or read about.......
I hate to do it but I must

Posts that have referenced a lipo cell catching fire have been categorized as to failure cause. This list most certainly does not contain all the incidents and a statistical analysis would be meaningless. It does however show that the warnings presented for lipo cells are not just legaleeze but warnings that should be heeded to prevent possible personal harm and/or property damage.
