ok,so you guys are going with the assumption that a lipo just sitting there can just spontaneously combust.I am not going to get into that discussion here,BUT,if this is the basic idea, and you want a safe place to store lipos,
2 air tight safes from SAM's.
isn't this basically making a bomb??especially if you have a bunch of lipos stored in there

No way to get enough of them in there to blow a safe apart.

But a light duty steel ammo can crammed full of lipos can blow up.

And yes, lipos often go up in flames just sitting there.
Sure, there is always some cause like damaged cells and such but the damage is often invisible and only shows itself by going up in smoke and fire hours, days, weeks or months after the damage was sustained.

As careful as you think you are while handling them, you have no way of knowing how they were handled before they got to you.

There are even several threads of brand new lipos at storage voltage going up in flames in the hobby shop...before they were even purchased or used.

It happens and telling people otherwise is irresponsible.

I literally never use the word literally right.

When they go bad I put them in an old barbeque grill and close the lid. Haven't really decided what to do past that. Only talking about 7.4v packs.
What's the best way to disable them once bad?

I dont see where anyone said it couldn't happen.I said that if you are starting with the basic idea that they may ignite,a sealed container sounds like a bad idea.
No way to get enough of them in there to blow a safe apart.
I dont see how you can make a blanket statement like that.It depends on the construction of the safe and the power of the object(s) igniting.
And yes, lipos often go up in flames just sitting there.
this I would have to disagree with.If you consider the ammount of lipos out there, against DOCUMENTED cases of a lipo igniting while NOT being charged or discharged(used in flight, ect)..it is VERY MINIMAL, hardly often.

I am not saying it cant or doesn't happen,or that people shouldn't handle and store lipos properly,it is just rare for a healthy lipo to ignite just sitting

I bet I know how we got here again :roll eyes:
An undamaged storage charged lipo has an almost zero chance of igniting. I say almost because nothing is fool proof when humans are involved.

Store lips in a vented case because if something does happen, the pressure caused by expanding gasses from combustion could cause the case to blow apart. If it vents, as long as the heat stays in the container, it will be ok………..

.38 is the smallest I have, but I guess that would work also

I'm with you, fenderstrat, probably happens about as often as a human spontaneously combusting. It's something I just don't worry about.

.17 Remington is rolling @ 4200 fps.
Basically a 20gr projectile on top of a .223 case @ max charge.
It's explosive all by itself.

lol...I guess I did...and I'm not wrong

I didn't mean to say "often" as in it happens all the time.

What I meant is that when lipos do go up in flames,it's often when they are just sitting there.

I literally never use the word literally right.
