Sounds defective, based on a thread on the other heli forum.

Google "Magic Mirror tach manual" and read through the thread on the second link.

It only has two adjustments. The flash rate (the indicated head speed) and the F number. The F number can be adjusted to help with seeing the blades or head in different lighting situations. You get to it by holding down the middle button for a couple seconds. I believe the range is 1 to 10.

The indicated headspeed is simply an up and down adjustment. The five stored headspeeds usually come from the factory in ascending order. Click through those to get to the one closest to your suspected headspeed. Then adjust up or down from there until the blades appear to stop.

If you are seeing multiple blades then you are off by quite a bit. It is not an automatic device. You must manually find the headspeed by making the blades and head "stop."

the screen that shows p-01 and so on, if you click thru those while looking at the heli, you will be able to see 5,4, 3 and 2 blades.

Yes, those are the factory quick recall settings. You can change them as well.

I don't want to imply anything at all, but you do know that you have to adjust it yourself to hone in on the headspeed, right? The first step is to set it to around where you think your headspeed is or should be. Say, 2,000 RPM, then go from there.

Have you used any other optical tachometer before?

Don't look at the blade tips, look at the rotor head. The rotor head has better contrast.

John,

i understand i need to use the + and - to adjust the tach until i see the blades stop. maybe im not starting close enough to what my head speed is.
i have only used a shutter type head speed tach 2 other times. so it looks like i just need to play with it some more. im going to have a few hundred helis to tach this weekend. im sure after the weekend ill have it down pat. thanks John for the tips

Magic mirror
Hi I had the same problem this weekend whilst trying mine and what I found is turn it down to below what you think your head speed is and you will see the blades turning in the driven direction, then keep increasing it till the blades stop turning in the driven direction. If you continue to turn it up the blades will start to turn in the opposite direction in the viewer, you will then get another reading at nearly double the head speed when they stop again but this head speed is incorrect so you need to be looking for the chance from driven direction to stop. I found it very accurate once we had realised that. Hope this helps :-) that is what I found anyway.

The completely olde fashioned MA tach works much better and is on a fire sale now for $69. That's the 3K version without label apparently.

Yes, they do. Much better contrast ratio.

69 dollars! That's a great price. I bought mine years ago for 160 I believe. Still works great!

set your desired HS , say 1800 on p-01, set your second desired HS say 2000 on p-02 and set your 3rd HS on p-03.. Go back to p-01, hover your heli !... When you're about to reach your first target HS, if the blades are turning clockwise slowly, press the - button till the blades are stationary!... If the blades go counter clockwise, press the + button till you get the blades stationary! ... If your throttle is on 67-70, remember that and get your partner to put it on p-02, continue on for the next HS say going up on throttle till you reach the blades slowly going clockwise or counterclockwise... Clockwise slowly means you're above your target (recorded) HS. Counter clockwise, you're still below the target HS.

It's also important that you set your set points close to the desired HS as you will get false readings otherwise. For example, if the headspeed of your rotor is going 1500, and you start your reading at 3500 RPM and work your way down, you are likely to get a stationary image at 3000 RPM. Likewise, if you are trying to read 3000 RPM, but start trying to read at 1000 RPM and work your way up, you are likely to get a stationary image at 1500 RPM.

When used correctly, the Magic Mirror is very accurate, and very easy to use.

Accurate, yes, it seems to be so. Easy to use? That's a matter of debate just as has been. It lacks contrast which makes it harder to use than other types of optical tachs.

My buddy has one, as long as you are close on your guess as to where to start, it's pretty easy, and seems accurate.

That has been our experience also. Knowing where to start is key.

Look at the head not the blades and it works fine.
