Super excited!! Recently, I was able to work out a good deal and acquire my first 1/4 scale helicopter and it just arrived today!

Got it from a fellow RR buddy which whom I'm sure I have made a lifelong friend. Spent quite a while on the phone with him today as I was getting a bit more familiar with the new heli. I'll be giving more kudos in the "Testimonial" thread tomorrow.

She's a Vario 1/4.5 Hughes 500E with all nav. lights and searchlight wired and installed with controller. Searchlight has vertical and horizontal capabilities. All rivets are in place and topped off with a killer paint job done by the original owner. Also, she has the Vario Benzine mechs. with a Scorpion motor installed and a 5 blade head with the over-sized rotor cap and a full cockpit with seats and control sticks.

Only additions needed to complete the RTF package will be servos, receiver and stab. system, which I will be ordering tomorrow.

Here she is...

Hey y'all, watch this!

Wow! That is a beautiful bird. What size mechanics makes a 1/4 scale?

What Makes It 1/4 Scale
In the Hughes 500 the Benzin mechanics are the "norm", and it is the size of the fuselage that makes it 1/4 scale..
On my 47, it takes a different set of mechanics and head, since the full size is larger then a 500...
Rckfish has a 1/3 scale that makes my 1/4 scale look like a 800 size heli sitting next to it..

If you check out the pic's from the Dalton event, take a look at the new Vario AS350... it is a BIG heli...(and on my list for eventually!!!!)

They are all fun, but bigger flies better!!! At least in my book...

Stan

Grim, are you coming to Pittsburgh this weekend?? I will be there with my 47...and Pauls 800 size Cobra...

Thanks, Guys!
Man, I can't stop drooling over this heli. And I have SO much work left to do on the 135. Decisions, decisions.

Marc28 - Thanks so much! I just glanced at your gallery and I must say, WOW! Very nice collection you have going there.

Tyler - Thanks so much!

Stan - Thank you, sir! Yea, wish I could take credit for the paint job. Beautiful, indeed. BTW, you & Paul need to make plans to come this way soon! Would love to fire up the outdoor kitchen and fly some helis off the back deck.

Paul - Thank you, sir! Ms. Claude is just beautiful! Can't wait to see her in person. You need to get with Stan and come visit soon! Another drummer?! NICE! Yea, I'd love to get my hands on a nice acoustic set but I'm not sure the neighbors would approve. With the Roland, I can just pop on a set of headphones or at least crank it down enough to keep the peace. Would enjoy meeting up and just rockin' out sometime.

Grim - Thanks SO much, man. It's much appreciated.

Hey y'all, watch this!

Nice heli and a super nice paint scheme. Is it detailed out with rivets and panel lines etc(can't tell from the pics)? You will find one common thread amongst all of us, BIGGER flies better. You'll love flying this heli.
Barry

All helis and planes have an expiration date stamped on them...you only find it after you crash!!

Size Comparison....
Since the question was asked, I thought I would add a couple of pic's to show the size comparisons...
Shayne, not trying to hijack your thread... I am really looking forward to getting together... I am sure Paul and I will be able to put a trip together soon...I am heading to TX Fri morning and should be home by Sunday.. should be the last event for me for 2013..actually ready for a little break....

Grim, yes I will be there with the 47 and the Cobra....looking forward to meeting you....

The Yellow and Red is a 800 sized Hughes 500E

The Build In Progress is a 1/4 scale Hughes 500D

Low profile landing gear on the build due to full size being same

Taller landing gear on the 500E

Cabin Area on the 500E, note servo tray next to pilots

Cabin area on 500D, note that it is empty and can be fully detailed
\
Front 700 Trex, 800 size Hughes 500E, rear 1/4 scale 500D

Hope this will help some see the actual size differences..

Shayne,
Whenever you are ready...Stan and I will be on the way!

Love the Rolands...played them for many years...the mesh heads are like driving a race car to me...responsive, fast & smooth.

Grim...here is my 1/3 scale 300C that Stan referenced...a whopper chopper!

Now, getting back to Shayne's new 500E...more photos!...more photos!

Thanks
Barry - Yes, it's outfitted with rivets and panel lines. Dennis did an amazing job on it. I'll get some close ups of it this weekend. Thanks for the encouraging words. Looking forward to spooling her up the 1st time.

Stan - No problem at all, brother. Hijack away. I could always learn something new. Good info. there.

Just lemme know whenever is a good time for you & Paul to head this way. My schedule is pretty-much open 7 days a week.

Paul - That 300 is just ridiculous! Beautiful machine. I will definitely get some close-ups of the 500 this weekend.

Grim - Once bitten, you can never shake it. It's SO much more relaxing to fly scale. You will never be the same.

Hey y'all, watch this!

I am curious why it is called 1/4 scale. Is it actually a quarter size of a real heli ?

Size
You are correct. A 1/4 scale is 1\4 the size of the full size heli..
