My intention is not to "smack down" ideas.

But as demonstrated here, when a tragic accident happens to a single person everyone tries to do something about when honestly all it was was freak tragic accident.

I'm not an advocate of flying very close to yourself and if I am close by someone that is, I simply walk away far enough where I won't be within range.

If you want to fly behind a cage, more power to you. Just don't force it on all of us. I do not want to be penalized for people who fly in a risky manner or for the one in a million chance that "something" could happen. Every day I step out of bed "something" could happen, and many of us do not wish to live our lives in cages.

lol!!

any extreme sport is about testing the limits till death do us part. Accepted Risks? Risk Management? Risk Assessment? Risky Business? Risky Behavior? Things to consider each time you fly, things worth considering before you lift off, DEFINITELY.

An oncoming gust can blow a heli in a hurricane or regular turn toward you. Gotta be careful in wind, make sure it can be away from you or towards your sides. I've learned my lesson on that one.

But if we do not reign ourselves in, then we will be penalized for those who continue to fly in a risky manner through local ordinances and laws.

I don't fly close in (mainly 'cause I'm not that good) and cringe sometimes when watching others try things close. Do I want to fly behind a screen? NO! But if we don't show some forethinking, then we will be penalized.

The only forethinking necessary is to step back when someone is flying in a manner you don't approve of.
Local Laws and ordinances are not going to come into play over one accident.

Really? How about the fact that they have already called for a moritorium on heli flying in that park for further investigation? Just step number 1, friend...

A few years ago I went to the rotary wings club and watched a guy do inverted high speed passes past himself 1ft off the ground within 3 feet of himself. I made the observation that one of those guys would kill themselves. Unfortunatley I was right. It seems that u can not protect everyone from themselves. My friend routinely flys too close to himself I just hope his luck doesnt give out on him. Dave.We all have had a wake up call.

ahh, does the bad apple not spoil the bunch, that is, the few reckless ones who happenstance do an ultimate fail cause average persons to generalize the entire rc heli lot as nut cases on a suicidal mission? Well, maybe not all of them, like scale flyers, lol.

They...?

One city councilman asked the Dept of Parks & Rec to consider a temporary ban, while the investigation was conducted.

Exactly.

Every time there is a tragic accident, some idiot calls for a ban on whatever they were doing.
It never happens.

Panic mongers are going to help the idiots trying to ban stuff and not the other way around.

Google dangerous helis and threads like this one is what you get.
This just gives the idiots more ammo.

The best way to handle it is to offer condolences and move along.
Police yourself and stop filling the internet with horror stories for the panic mongers to find with a simple mouse click.

Thousands of people now think the helis are a menace but would never have even noticed them if not for crazy threads like this one.

Drop it and move on or YOU will be the end of your hobby.
The infinitesimal number of unsafe pilots are not the problem...YOU are.

I literally never use the word literally right.

I just Googled dangerous helis and the hundreds and hundreds of results are discussion forums talking about how dangerous it is.

There were no actual news stories about it...Just panic mongers filling the web with possibilities.

You want the panic mongers to stop?
Stop giving them things to use against you.

One death will not change anything.
Tens of thousands of people spreading lies and misinformation about it will.

I literally never use the word literally right.

Then we should have banned actual cars & jets (non RC) long ago. Death and injury happen every year, if not more frequently. Banning does not fix the issue; people have the ability to approach the problem more intelligently.

If anything, I think we should demonstrate to the public that we're at least trying to implement safety measures for such incident rather than saying "oh it's was just a freak accident" and merely "move on".

Another separate thought (hence a separate line or paragraph): Also remember these conversation on Run Ryder are visible to any non-member in the world to read. Show them we're trying to implement safety, or someone else with higher power may ban it or restrict the hobby to where it is no where as fun, including possibly fees or other high-cost insurance, or other extreme measures.

Exactly my point...they know about the danger because you told them.
It would never have crossed their mind otherwise.

Then the danger is profanely exaggerated on these boards which calls more fear into play.

I literally never use the word literally right.

Impossible.
Those things are an absolute necessity in modern life.

Toy helicopters are not.
The average person would ban them and think they made the world a safer place for normal muggles.

Stop perpetuating the horror stories...They're most fairy tales anyway.

I literally never use the word literally right.
