Heli flying could be made safer simply by requiring you to fly 30 feet away from yourself and not allowing spectators within 200 feet. There it did not cost anything. Doing nothing is not an option.
We already do this, as for the 30 feet there is no way to measure but 30 feet is a reasonable number that I see most people abide by on a daily basis.

There is really nothing new that's going to come from this, we have already put safety precautions in play. Regardless, as I've said earlier...freak accidents will happen.
Let's be clear that those RC boating related deaths were all a result of drowning while trying to retrieve a dead boat out in the water.
Yes, that is true but the same. It's all subjective.

No?

how about you measure 10 to 15 paces (yards) or even toe to heel step it out and mark with a stick and flag, cone, landing marker, etc, and keep your heli beyond that at all times. A lazer system will sound a blast horn in your ear and the ama will fine you everytime you break and come inside the prescribed distance for safe heli flight, haha, ain't gonna happen, but a thought.

That's crazy about the rc boaters.

They could handle things a little different in the future. If a boat dies they send out a rc tug, if that dies a quad is next, if that fails they send out a helicopter,

Do you guys really think having a distance requirement is going to change anything? Now, I am not talking about AMA sanctioned events and things like that, because of course, the distance requirement can be enforced. But in average, every day flying, it will not work. Who is going to enforce it? As unfortunate as it is, do you think your flying buddy is going to remind you that you're flying to close? I dont fly close, but who am I to tell someone at the field not to? How many of you have witnessed something dangerous while out to the field, but said nothing?
I am sure and ones who fly closely, know about the dangers of flying too close, but they will continue to do so. I am sure some "close fliers" have moved back because of this unfortunate incident, but how many of them do you suppose continue on tempting fate by flying dangerously close.

The only way to ensure this does not happen again (besides government intervention) is simple...STOP FLYING CLOSE!

And creating a distance for the spectators is good in theory, but freak accidents happen at 200 feet, too. How many of those people who died at air show disasters thought they were at a safe distance? I remember watching a guy lose his tail and the thing went crazy and must have landed 150-200 feet away. Of course and out of control heli at 200 feet is a alot less dangerous than one at 50 feet, but you get my point Plus, what fun it would be watching from 200 feet away? Spectators need to be closer, BUT with an enforced shelter to stand behind.

It is impossible to enforce people to have common sense. Like many have said before we just need to be a little less complacent and have this in the back of our minds and move forward learning what we could from all of this.

It is an inherently dangerous hobby like a lot of other hobbies out there. People should realize that just by knowing there are carbon fiber blades spinning at high RPM's.

Maybe manufacturers need to have more warnings on packaging or something to prevent the common sense failure from happening??

Hello everyone,

I like to thank everyone for there concern on this matter, I am seeing some long winded post and some short to the point, But what I like to point out is that this still is fresh in all our minds just this pasted weekend I was up at the mass FF it was over whelming to see the support there from the fellow fliers I thank you all.

I like to point out that I indeed talked with fellow pilots my own included and ask them to keep it safe they all understood where I was coming from; the event was run great pilots and all where kept back on a buffer zone.

One thing I like to point out lets remember this is still very fresh for Roman SR who is in that hobby and does come online, we have talked about all the good and some of the wrong things said online lets remember this and also put yourself in his place would you like what your saying about his son if it was your son that this happen to. So ask your self that before you use this forum to be an expert on why his is gone and what happened at the end of the day a great kid is gone leaving a void for his family to why did the is happen to my son and brother, how things unfolded that day are not clear I have talked with one club member who was packing up and only heard the impact the other two I have not but the club president did and basically said the same thing, I feel that the event was so tragic seeing a young man that we all know for many years fall that recounting it just to hard maybe in the future the father will have closer but for now he needs your prayers he is a broken man and if anyone has ever be this broken by an event if there life then you know what he is going though GOD SPEED to all.

I second Dino's post. The pain of losing a loved one is immense. Lets all give his dad some respect and mutual understanding. Next time it could be your son... Nuff said.

I am 100% with Dino on this, and agree with Mojave...

Personally, I would like to see this post closed.. taking nothing from a tragic loss, but to stop the bickering about all of the what if's and he said/she said writers on here.

Our prayers are with Roman Sr., and I hope that he and his family will be able to find peace to somehow live with this terrible loss..eventually..

not to be a kook, but the suggestions being made were in the interest of raising awareness in the name of safety however idiotic they seem on the face of it. They also thought seat belts were idiotic.

I was at youtube looking at 300x stuff and this vid stuck out, and although I would have responded earlier to praise Dino S's reply to this topic, a very touching one, it was better waited on and only to stumble on to this RP vid with dad. As Dino said, it's still too fresh in everyone's minds.

...this topic is really just going around in circles...

If majority of these would have been bystander injuries, fine put up your fortresses and laws for when flying in such cases. If this is the pilot himself, thats on the pilot.

guys accidents happen with EVERYTHING we do...let it go.

this whole thing of raising awareness...got it, I think you raised well above Jesus already.

I think the whole point of this, and numerous other threads, is to try to avoid a "next time".

If your out at a field flying these things there is a much higher chance you will get hit by one than someone who is not at the field flying them.
How many times have each one of us almost gotten hit or almost hit someone else?it is most fortunate this doesnt occur more often.

There are more appropriate places to discuss safety topics and new threads can be created. There is a safety discussion forum on runryder as well.

My condolences to the family and friends.

Rest in peace Roman.
