BSHINN's comments are the best on this thread. While tragic accidents may take family, friends, and loved ones we ALL should do what humans do best: take away the best and learn from the worst.

Dads: learn from the best example that Roman's father set. Get involved with your kids - their childhood goes by so fast, you'll be incredibly sorry if you don't.

Flyers: learn from this tragedy that even the best of us can be a victim of the risky nature of our sport.

In short: don't take ANYTHING for granted, be it your family and friends OR the safety and well-being of yourself and those around you.

Roman - while I never met you, you were a kindred spirit. Rest in peace.

Very sad and condolences to the family and friends.

I read several on-line news reports and was shocked at the comments that are posted by readers following the articles. What kind of heartless people are populating this country?

The news reports again demonstrate an observation a friend and I have often made.

When you see a news report about a subject or incident of which you have personal knowledge, you will note that usually about one-half of what is in the report is inaccurate. Therefore it stands to reason that when you see a news report on a subject or incident that you do not have personal knowledge about, you can assume that a lot that report is inaccurate, also.

Ask your doctor if your heart is healthy enough for Radio Control Helicoptering.

The worrisome thing for me is that the proposed "investigation" of the accident could likely be conducted by persons with absolutely no foundation of knowledge about a model helicopter, the potential REAL causes for loss of control, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, the clues to any one of those failures in a post crash evaluation. Many of us here know how to look at things like tail blade condition, whether the boom showed evidence of in flight impact, etc, etc, but right now we are dealing with pure ignorance with people like this councilman talking about how windy it was. I sincerely hope AMA and representatives of the local club(s) make a concerted effort to get further out in front of this as this feeding frenzy builds, because if they do not, all that is going to result is a bunch of ill conceived regulations that will do little or nothing to reduce the chances of another accident and, furthermore, will do nothing to honor and respect the memory of this young man.

The councilman is asking for a temporary ban. This is standard operating procedure whenever a serious accident occurs.

A moratorium is different from a ban, but it is still a troubling turn of events.

Remember, the AMA is currently our only organized lobbying group to protect us against losing this hobby. We need to support the AMA.

(Say what you will about the National Rifle Association, but despite the occurrence of yet another mass-shooting every few months, AR-15, M-16, and AK-47 military assault rifles continue to be legal to purchase and possess because the NRA has successfully lobbied to keep guns legal.)

The Academy of Model Aeronautics, for better or for worse, is our equivalent of the NRA. If you are not a member of the AMA, it is time to join. If you have not renewed your membership with the AMA, it is time to pay up.

I sincerely doubt that Roman Priozek Jr. would want his legacy to be a nationwide ban on the sale and possession of RC helicopters.

This incident was dramatized on Inside Edition. Ask any stranger on the street, and you will find that they have heard about what happened. It's a big deal nationwide and even worldwide. A temporary moratorium on flying RC helicopters in New York City is just the start of what is going to unfold over the following weeks and months as law enforcement agencies, insurance agencies, expert witnesses, and lawyers become involved in the aftermath.

This is the time to support the AMA. They are our collective mouthpiece.

We owe it to Roman to keep this hobby flourishing. This is what he would have wanted.

Well said. And I would urge those of us who are not members, to join the AMA soon. We really don't have any other lobbying organization.

When all is said and done insulting a member of the local government is not going to help a bit, might even sway them towards the result you don't want.

Keep in mind the local club officers were able to obtain a flying field inside a public park, a feat most of us would not be able to achieve. I am sure they and the ama can deal with this properly.

It's just within CITY PARKS, it's not nationwide or even city wide it's simply in their parks.

While its no good to not be able to fly helis, I certainly understand the city wanting to learn more about our models since this story has made international headlines.

In the meantime guys can still fly at private fields or anywhere deemed "safe to fly" just not at city owned parks if the request is granted.
