Once the news media gets a hold of something like this, they run with it, regardless of the truth of the matter or how much it hurts the people closest to it.

I've been mulling this over for the entire day trying to decide if, or how to respond.

I think I would like to take a different approach, everyone seems to be focusing on how sad this is and I can't deny that, but maybe it would be helpful for those directly involved to look at it from another angle.

Malcom Forbes' epitaph is "While Alive, He Lived", and I suspect it applies here.

From what I have read about this tragedy, Roman's father was "responsible" for his involvement in the hobby.

If this is the case, KUDOS TO YOU SIR!

As the son of a father who was disengaged from my activities in my teen's because I didn't play Golf or other "stick & ball" sports I can only imagine the positive impact you had on Roman's life.

If all fathers spent the time, effort, and money you did to bond with Roman and get him into this hobby the world would be a much better place!

I never met Roman, but he passed doing something he loved, and I can think of many worse ways to leave this life.

I doubt Roman is feeling sorry for himself, but instead is thankful for the time he spent with the ones he loved and cared for, and loved and cared for him.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours. Please seek whatever help you need to get past this tragedy, the world needs more men like you to help the next generation.

You are to be commended!

HIGH WINDS?

In all the news reports not one has a witness saying what stunt he was performing or that Roman flew too close to himself. here have a look at some of his flying,

Everyone cracks about "flying lawnmower", not so funny after this.

In response to icanfly two posts above:

I check the weather historical data for Brooklyn, NY at 3:30pm 05Sep, and the wind is less than 10mph with no gust. It may not be 100% accurate, but very unlikely high wind is the root cause of the accident.

R.I.P. roman. I had the pleasure to watch him fly he's a world class pilot for align. This is truly devastating. This is a reminder also how dangerous out hobby is it takes just a split second of anything happening mechanical failure loss off orientation ANYTHING. aI think as we progress we become more comfortable with our helis which is sometimes not a good thing. This can happen to anyone even the best of us. Very very sad roman will truly be missed......:'(

First thing...the more I watch the new reports the more I realize that reporters are not well informed...high winds, really... He was way too good to not be able to handle his machine in a good ammount of wind.

Things I have noticed in the flight videos.

He is a very good pilot, not overly aggressive, and pretty smooth.

He is not that close to himself...compared to many pilots I've seen he actually had a pretty good distance between him and the heli...in the vids

Align DFC heads which have been known to have some issues if the damping isn't setup right or is worn out...Ive seen more than one explode personally.

Flybarless...electronics hate vibrations regardless of brand. Extreme vibes will send any doing unintended maneuvers.

All you have to do is loose it in fast backwards circles approaching the pilot and close to have something very bad happen.

Based on what I have seen from many pro pilots this guy is pretty darn safe from the vids Ive seen. I doubt he would have been practicing a new move so close to him that if he lost it he would cause bodily harm....I am definitely leaning towards freak accident due to some sort of failure. I would definitely like to know the status of his Tx throttle hold switch...

Based on the tech we have now our Tx's could easly be our black boxes. All we would need is GPS information (Tx location and Rx location) and record the stick movements and attitude...with this info we could probably find out why this tragedy happened and how to fix it...i doubt we will learn anything from the scene other than helis are not toys and they can kill you

Maybe not the place for this, but I like the idea of a black box in the aircraft and radio.

I just saw the article in the New York Post and I'm disgusted by it as well. I cannot believe they printed what they did.
And another thing that bothers me is the tone of the comments on the newspaper sites.

The misinformed and speculative news media is doing a real injustice to the recently departed. If they want to expand on the story then they should research the topic first!

I feel sorry for his family and friends as they will suffer most.
They should name that flying field "Roman Field" after him. His memory and spirit lives on.

To: Roman's dad, do not feel guilty, he did what he loved to do.

Guys, keep those helicopters at a safe distance. Fly safely.
