I just cracked my touchscreen on my 14tmz.
How can you tell if it's the touch screen the LCD behind it?
Without taking it apart.

I don't think it's LCD screen or it would be blurry or really messed up.
It seems to be just the touch screen.
If that's the case I can feel some sense of relief.
If its LCD, u might as well toss the radio at 700.00 for just the part as I understand th3 price.

Thanks, I knew that much from all the posts about the poor touchscreens all the 14's have/ had.
I just wondered if someone could tell if it was the touch screen our the LCD by looking at the pics.
Gary.

Replacing the touch screen panel in the 14mz
The overlying glass is the touch panel assembly and can be replaced. You can see the LCD is still working fine with just the outer glass broken.

There is a lot of disassembly that must be done in order to get to it and if you do it you should also replace the rubber gasket.

I sold my 14mz a while back and bought a Futaba 14SG-H....best thing I ever did! Do not need a fancy color display that was hard to read unless reflected directly in the sun, with a high current draw! The backlight was worthless unless used in dark - drawing way too much from the battery....

I would be interested to see a Hobby Services part number for the glass alone and how that price compares to just doing the whole screen. Labor is going to be effectively the same.

Futaba/ Hobbico part number
HSP79426 (Touch Panel) Approximately $140 at last check.

This is what the touch panel looks like. It sits on top of the backlit display. It also has the attached lower buttons and thumb wheel which is removable.

One of my trim switches went and I had to replace it

Ok all clear now. I was talking about the same piece you are in the context that it is more than just a piece of glass. I misunderstood that part's relationship to the actual display; I thought it was a complete sandwich with display. Thanks for the clarification. The good bottom line is that it ain't $700 to fix the OP's issue.

PS: That is no easy transmitter tear down. The labor HS charges to do it is well justified unless you possess that skill set.

I recently had the screen replaced on my 14MZ in order for it to qualify for the Futaba Certified Pre-Owned program. The screen wasn't cracked, but it wasn't as responsive as it's supposed to be and needed to be replaced.

Here are the actual numbers from me invoice.

Screen: $139.16
Gasket: $4.60
Labor: $20.00
Return Shipping: $9.99

Total: $173.75

Having the new screen and gasket installed by the Futaba Service Center for $20.00: Pricess

I thought the $20.00 labor fee was very reasonable.

Man, thanks for all the help.
I took it apart the next day and sure enough just the touch panel.
Unfortunately I broke the plug the speaker uses.
Now I need a new speaker too.
I'll fix it meself.
You guys are the best!
