At IRCHA, I went to the Align booth and asked the pilots there.. "When will the 3GX support DSMX?"

Their answer: "We don't fly that. Most of us use the v-bar.

So I asked: "Will the 3GX support DSMX soon? Or will it require new hardware?"

Their answer: "Yeah, new firmware probably won't do it. It will probably take new hardware."

Sigh..

What are they even there for? Why don't Align pilots use their own FBL unit? Why didn't they know that DSMX was already in development?

I really don't get it. If your whole job is to play with your company's product, and evangelize it to the public, why wouldn't you know this? Wouldn't you NEED to know this? It is your job.

Because reps are supposed to be the voice of the company to current and potential customers. Some companies do a better job of keeping their reps informed then others.

And, perhaps he owns a 3GX like I do. I'm holding on to it for whenever a "golden" firmware version is released that makes it a viable option. I.e., if Align reps ever actually use the 3GX, I'll pull it out of the drawer and use it.

Product information/support is one of the very reasons people attend IRCHA. Being able to talk directly to a vendor about a product face-to-face and building a relationship with that vendor is not something that can easily be accomplished via email or telephone.

Why does the Align team not use the 3gx?
because it is a cheap bottom of the barrel FBL unit that flys mediocre at best.

Align needs to sell rebranded vbars in its kits like gaui does.

Why do I care?

I wanted to buy one, and use it. I was looking at buying a whole 700 DFC combo. All I wanted to know is that they were working on making the 3GX work in DSMX mode. They said "no, probably new hardware required." So I didn't buy one.

They were wrong on both points, and lost a sale.

JKos,
A few pilots in my area are really liking the 3.1 firmware. One even said, "I'll never need to spend on a v-bar again." And he's one of the better pilots here in the northwest.

Now that the 4.0 firmware is out, with many more stabilization enhancements, you really should give it another try.

I think it's excellent they apparently are free to choose,

If you go to a car dealer and the sales guy drives a different company car, are you going to listen to him tell you how awesome that one is?

I would rather hear their honest opinion that what is forced down them for a paycheck.

Besides the pilots jobs are not to know their product and be sales guys, their job is to make the heli look good by taking it to the max

they might as well use rebranded vbar like gaui since they pretty much copied gaui on new 450(?)

Actually the new 450 looks like a scaled down 600E Pro.
I fly the 3GX on 3 Furion 450s,2 Furion 600s and 2 T-Rex 600Es. I love them. They just fly great with no fiddling.

we have not used them since first couple of versions, had a few interesting flights after resets. I made a habit of staying under building when they were flying lol. I have heard they are pretty good now, and cant beat the prices on them.

I'm currently flying eight different helis using the 3GX, from Trex 250 up to and including a Trex 700 Nitro Pro.

None have had a hint of problems, all have performed very well.

I had initial problems with a 3GX in my Gaui NX4, I solved that by getting rid of the foam mounting tape that came with the Gaui kit, and replacing it with trusty old 3M 4011 gray double-sided mounting tape.

Setup is a breeze, and they usually require little additional tinkering with once you finish the initial setup.

Feed them with adequate power (I try to feed BOTH of the lower, horizontal connectors in the connector block with power), make sure your requlator or BEC can handle the current needed to fly an FBL heli. Eliminate any switches or extraneous wiring/contraptions between the power source and the 3GX.

-----

Use the Gray 3M 4011 double-sided tape to mount them (or the 3M clear "VHB" tape), and go have fun.

-----

Version 3.1 software is pretty darn good.

With the release of V4.0, you're now able to take advantage of the DSMx protocol when coupled with DSMx satellites and, of course, a DSMx transmitter.

I recently updated all ten of my 3GX units (two still in the box waiting for a ride) to V4.0. Test hovers of the smaller ships in my driveway have shown no bad habits, and with some luck, I'll get to try out the new SW this weekend.

-----

One of the best parts is that you can pick up brand new in the box 3GX systems for about $60 - $75 because people have bought into the hype that they're no good.

With the release of V4.0, it now DOES, and no new hardware is required. The SW update is quick, painless, and simple.

I've got a 3GX and I'll probably try it with the new software just to see what it can do.

I must say I like that at least Align is proceeding with [what seems to be] their own evolution of the firmware. They are continuing to put in time & effort necessary to make these complex flybarless units function. For that I give them credit. Some out there actually hack & copy instead.

I picked up a new 3GX inexpensively. I am very happy with it! It flies and feels great and the governor is excellent.

In fact, I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another one. Give it a try - I don't think that for 99% of the pilots out there, they would be disappointed.

I just finished building a 450L and used the included 3GX unit. This will be my first 3GX. Anxious to see how it compares to the vbars.
