There is NO doubt in my mind that this man, Gustave Whitehead, beat the Wright Brothers to punch. Reminds me a little bit of another figure from history who's contributions were muffled. Nikola Tesla.

There, their and they're. It's really that simple.

Yes I will agree - but their is at least one prior to White Head
The Argument between The Wrights vr's Whitehead are more than legendary.

But one must actually crack into the book's and such of the period and to know some thing of the Politics and Countries involved.

One of my most precious -Is a Photo Archive - Not for Loan

Literary like the Space Race of the 60's. The Re- writing of the event's or to cover History : Too Make it So --- AMERICAN

To give you kinda a short cut : Wright's were Financed as I recall by The Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.c. " Hence They where NOT Allowed to Fail " The Investment

Better Than Water Gate for the period

Whitehead spanked em { BUT } some one else beat White HEad ??

He is one of my aviation hero's -a nutt's in the Butt from France

The replica built of the Wright Flyer and "powered" after Glide test's - I believe actually killed some one - and Never did make the advertized distance required. It might of been Beechley or Curtis who actually fixed the abomination for them and T'd em off -MAJOR !

The little guy is known as the Horn Dog that fly's the little Demosille in the movie { Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machine's }

1st started in France with soft hydrogen envelopes, then he went to a cigar shape with a rudder and carriage powered by a tiny motor and flew it around the tower.

Then he tried the stand up - basket and the canard chasing cow's in a pasture:crazy with a trim wheel and a pusher - motor issues

He could get it air born - repeatable but not turn it

Ya got enough - go find the Horny French Guy

Grey,
The Smithsonian was supporting Langley's (failed) work at a powered "aerodrome". The Wrights, as far as I understand history, were self-funded from money's made on other businesses *(and very frugal living).

The Wrights seemed to have made the major strides about controls, airfoil design, propeller design, even engine design! Wing warping was bviously a dead end (but hey, it might be coming back!)- then they got themselves foolishly tied up in litigation and never got any further; right or wrong Glenn Curtis' design beat the Wright flyer and became the preferred configuration and control method. Looks like ultralights today.

Never, ever, ever, ever give up.

Wright and Langley competed for the same $$$

I think the top Film clip might show Langley launching off his house boat a couple of times

While the Wright;s were spinning around looking for the Empirical Scientific Deduction - Trying to back engineering from what they where hearing about over sea's ;

The European's where Hugh jump's ahead since they where pretty much Top Dog in Ballonooo's then the ridged .

The Famous CODY Kite gave the Wright's a lot of inspiration along with many of the other USA Pioneer's -Them Guy's WHERE CRAZY !!! Just the winch gear and retrieval of a man carrying kite was engineering at it finest. He was brilliant. --- You Go 1st

But we did use observation balloon's Just don't smoke in em Poof

The European's took a whole different tack - What worked / what didn't or go for it Strictly mass trial and error AND they shared each other ideas. It was truley the best times of Life and death

Wish I had a DA 200

THE BOOK I REFERRED TO :
Which I truly feel could be the greatest gift to a early connoisseur of flight history -the TRUE DISCOVERY YEAR"S - Each Picture is a endless story to examine . Breath Taking Smiles and Flying Romance
It will put you in the time period !

Man's First Powered Flight
It seems the answer depends on which country you call home

Popular history has it that the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk [in the United States] were the first to fly [a heavier-than-air craft], but this is not true! The first flight was by a twenty-five year old New Zealander, Richard Pearse on March 31, 1902
