Been hit by lightning once. Lost everything that was plugged in whether on surge protector or not. Surge protectors were fried. They are built to suppress surges and lightning pretty much does as it pleases.
Obviously, there will be those who disagree with me and maybe I'm not 100% right, but IMHO, the only way to protect from a real lightning strike is to unplug everything you want to keep during a lightning storm.
Surge protectors are extremely important and I use them on every important bit of electronics I own, but I unplug everything when the sky lights up. I live in Texas. Been here, done that.

I agree some bolts of lighting are just outragous with what power they have. I mean some lightning strikes if they hit trees it will blow up the tree and split it in half!! Millions of volts!! so anything with an electric current is unplugged just to be in the safe side. S

If my house got hit by lightning, I'd lay on the floor like I was unconscious until someone found me and I'd claim to be hit by lightning. About the second or third time this happened, I'd be all over the local media as the "Miracle Lightning Man" and I'd establish a fund at the bank for my "physical therapy" (i.e. - beer fund) and rake in the dough.

See ya later, suckers...

does a desktop computer tower have a fuse I could replace and a 42 inch flat screen have something that could be fixed? neither will power up
Hmmmm.... Sounds like your power supply is blown, and heck, your motherboard might be fried, if so, make sure to save that hard drive. Power supply is easy to replace, if your motherboard is fried too, you should'probably just build a whole new PC. Check out New egg's videos on YouTube, they provide a great selection of videos to help you out. I know my stuff, considering I've worked on my PC a lot before. Best wishes, Eli.

oh and new power supply did not fix problem in computer, this sucks
Yep, get that new motherboard. Graphics card too probably. Memory, CPU too, I bet. Maybe just buy new PC, but save that hard drive! It may still be OK.

Get a new computer and transfer the hard drive to it as a non-boot drive. You should be able to get to your files if the HD has not been fried.

It will be faster than an '07 machine. And most likely, it will be cheaper than trying to rebuild. You will have to buy a new motherboard and probably a new CPU. And then a new copy of windows since the old one is likely keyed to the old motherboard and its ethernet chip. Etc. etc.

Or you could put the drive into a friend's computer and see if your data is still there.

^ +1 what he said. You won't find the MB for that machine easily, not because it's a Dell or a special model but because the machine is 5 years old.

And you just can't pop the drive in and boot it up. Everything is keyed to your devices - ports, driver, etc. of your old machine.

Check Newegg. They have daily shockers for complete PC's that are quite decent for under $400.

The house just down the road from mine was hit by lightning about a month ago. Burned to the ground. That day was a particularly bad thunderstorm, seemed every few seconds a load bang would occur. Not much rain or wind, but man the lightning was ferocious. I have lighting rods on my house.

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

Well, I'm in the middle of a boomer right now. Just thought of something. Unplugging the power to your equipment helps, but remember, lightning can come in thru your cable or phone line.

A big Amen to that GyroFreak.
A friend of my wife is permanently brain-damaged from a lightning strike that came in through a land line while she was talking on it.

I have also watched ball lightning hover around a transformer and all the wires around it. It looked exactly like some of the descriptions you hear concerning ufo's. Eerie stuff.
