Just got off the phone with CC.. my talon popped on my 4-5 flight and also cooked my BeastX FBL!!

From CC they say the Talon is not enough for the Goblin 500 and they are now finding that out. They said even with it mounted upside down as I had and cutting the hole larger under the canopy, as I did, there is still not enough airflow over it... granted I do 70 mph passes across the field but I guess in hover??? They say it should have 5 mph at all times pretty much.

I am running scorpion 1350 with a 16T pinnion. 4500 65C pulse

They now are telling me (if they send me a new one under warranty) not to use it in the 500 and if I do and it blows they won't cover it. And they recommended a 130 amp ESC now for it.

Even with the stock setup they are finding the Talon 90 is not enough. This is after talking with CC on the phone.

Please no,,,CC this or that, you get what you pay for etc. Granted I think this is total BS on CC and SABs part as they recommended it and where to mount it but now, we are on our own on this one.

Just a service bulletin on my part just incase it has not been posted.

Oh boy, this is bad news. I have one of castle creations World Famous Talon 90 ESC on my goblin 500. I checked there website and found nothing in there service advisories. Its not that I don't believe you, but I also will be calling them, as this will be a unexpected financial set back. Thanks for the warning.

A heli swinging 500mm blades does not need a 130 amp controller. It may need a CC 130 as they rate their ESCs a little differently than most. Any good 90 pr 100amp ESC should do the trick like a Jive 100....

Did you ever get a chance to view the data log between first few flights?

The Talon does not have logging. I bought a ICE 100 and am using their 20 amp BEC. Talking with CC he said well its just 10 amps more then the Talon but since not using the BEC it will be a bit cooler.

They say the mounting in the goblin and no airflow is the issue. I just don't see how the pro pilots are not cooking them left and right unless none use the CC.

I cut more holes in the canopy, side and enlarged the lower one more. I also cut one right under the nose to have more direct flow. Fingers crossed.

There are a lot of people using the talon in the Goblin 500. That said there have been several that have had it fry. The common thing is if you make it pass the first 7 flights or so you should be fine.

I doing a build now and looking at ESC's, I thought about the talon, but the low cost is not worth the risk of taking out other stuff in a fire.

First 7 flights... o ok,, then you are safe

zbird,
Call CC and see if they tell you the same info.

If so Goblin needs to change their manual and also CC needs to put out a bulletin.

The reason I said first 7 flights or so is it appears that if it going to burn up it does so very quickly after being installed.

But this is only what I have gotten out of other people. There are a lot of different things that could be happening here. How it's installed, motor used, solder skills, and others.

Lets face it, its not like we have never heard of CC ESC's catching on fire in the past.

Ok,,,

I now have a ICE 100 amp in there with sep. BEC.

The logs say 167 on the temp. up to 134 amps pull.

I took the case off the ESC (plastic case) and also cut more holes in the bottom of the canpy...

With new mod- 127 on the temp and same on the amps... 125 ish peak. This is running 4500 pluse 65C, Scorpion 1350 KV with 16T in high gov mode. Flying harder 3D.

Thats the numbers.

I think you will be fine if you don't use the internal BEC. I don't think it is stout enough to handle the servo load.

Did the OP use a separate BEC or internal one?

I have been using a cheap Hobby Wing 100 Amp Gaui version on mine with Vbar and NO Governor. Just flying throttle curves. I run about 70-80% on st2. It NEVER gets hot.. I did NOT cut up my canopy and I have over 60 flights on her now.. I also been flying on days of about 105-110 ambient temps...

You guys might want to look at the Hobby Wing controllers.. They are CHEAP and work GREAT!!!

Hope this helps...

My buddy has the EXACT same setup.. Never a problem..

Oh, Also currently just using the BEC in the ESC.. No HV servos YET. But they are coming.. My friend is using HV with a 2 cell lipo for power.. No ISSUES!!!

Talon 90 / Goblin 500
I finally made the phone call to castle creations regarding use of the talon 90 in the goblin 500. I talked to one of there technicians in the tech department. He told me that it was ok to run the talon 90 in the goblin 500. He also told me that it was fine to use the internal bec in the talon. I did make the mistake however, of not getting his name.

Well, I've seen at least 2 Kontronik ESC's fail this season. I figure that's enough to set their failure rate about equal to CC, considering how many of each are out there of course.

As for the OP, I know this is some time ago but for CC to suggest their 90 amp esc with a 9 amp/20amp bec is "not enough" is pretty outrageous. So yes, I agree there.
It's very simple, a 6s 4500mah pack drained to 80% in a 4 minute flight draws an average of 54 amps. That's only 60% of the rated amps. I can't imaging that's seriously their position.
