hi all
did not want to hijack the thread, at my club i am in constant locked horns over these units and the fact when things go wrong the pilot is a just a passenger, but i am told they all have a failsafe,

my question is if it does have a fail safe why did it just input a command to take it into the crowd?

am just after some info

Some multi-rotor controllers can have a return to home feature. But typically it is activated if e.g. the Tx signal is lost.

My concern with this guy is that he was flying over a crowd in the first place. Fail safe or not, a mechanical failure would still cause problems.

There is no failsafe for gravity...

Let's put it this way...there is a black box on the multirotor that tells it important things like what level is.

Issues like vibration can skew what it though "level" was.

The brains of the auto pilot react to what is felt by the sensor to keep the multirotor in the air and level. If "level" is now actually 30deg from the horizonal (skewed by vibration) the multirotor will attempt to "level" its self straght into the crowd

The multirotor is inherently not stable and will crash if its gyro system has issues...

This is terrible for us. I posted in my club thread on RCG that one of our guys should refrain from that kind of stuff and I was told I was the safety police by a non member of our club
All it takes is for one incident with the right person/people involved on the bad side of things to make it REALLY bad on us. PLUS more and more people are using the HK CRAP electronics to boot!
Be safe all....

Its too bad that a lot of people like to throw safety to the wayside and choose to mock or ridicule anyone who has an objection or an opinion on doing something not safe.
And, they don't realize how stupid they were acting till its on a video being posted all over the web and tv like this one....

Try volunteering for safety/ rules enforcement on the flight line at IRCHA. For the most part the average joe pilot would listen but alot of the sponsored pilots and even event sponsors dont feel they have to listen to you or follow the rules that you are trying to enforce. I definitely had a couple of frustrating shifts as a volunteer due to those POS. I remember who they are and I will not support them or the company they represent.

I would sincerely hope that the higher ups at IRCHA would support the volunteers. It is generous enough of you to give up your time without having to put up with this.

Unless you are flying at show center, then rules are IRCHA pretty much are summarized by "don't fly outside of your box." But this quadcopter pilot was flying directly over a crowd.

This is a different thing than most people complain about altogether.

This is dangerous and borderline criminal behavior.

Those people didn't come to a heli or multirotor event and most have no clue about the dangers or even the very existence of the multi over their heads.
There were likely no warnings about overhead unmanned aircraft.

This is reckless endangerment...plain and simple.

Not the same thing as a 3D heli flyer flying within AMA regs at an event hosted and operated by the AMA at the AMA airfield.
Nor is it even similar to ANY 3D heli flyer flying at any sanctioned club or open private property.

It's dangerous and reckless to fly over people no matter what you fly and that doesn't(or shouldn't) happen at heli events.

I literally never use the word literally right.

FAA is investigating.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating after a drone fell out of the sky and into a crowd of people at a bull run in Virginia.

The remote-controlled aircraft was one of two flying over the "Great Bull Run" at Virginia Motorsports Park in Dinwiddie County, Richmond TV station WTVR reported.

The aircraft was capturing video of the bull run and tomato fight.

Event organizers said five people were struck when the aircraft fell. Three of the five people received treatment for minor injuries.

"We are investigating to see if the person flying the unmanned aircraft violated any FAA regulations, particularly the part that says 'No person may operate an aircraft in a careless or reckless manner so as to endanger the life or property of another,'" the FAA said in a statement.

WTVR reached out to the owner of the remote-controlled aircraft but has not yet received a reply.

After viewing the video, experts in the field of model aviation said it appeared the remote-controlled aircraft lost its signal with the transmitter before falling.

The machine is owned by Scott Hansen of Virginia Beach.

And Hanson leased it to the event...I wonder if the renter even knew how to fly one...Must not have if it crashed from a dead battery.

What kind of idiot leases something like this out?
Hansen claimed he was not at Saturday’s event and has no immediate plans to repair the significant damage to his device. He added he planned to stop renting out his flying camera — for now.
That's probably a solid idea Scott...

Scott's pretty smart...hes not liable he didn't fly it. Just like a gun shop owner isn't liable for selling a gun to a person who ends up doing something bad with it.

Think about it. The guys flying the machine are not doing it for money...its their own event.

Scott makes money on renting and if they break it he probably has insurance

The FAA made it hard for qualified people to fly for money...I guess this is one consequence.
