He survived and wasn't injured looks like, so he did a good job, IMO.. I think he was trying to see if he could make the highway, but was too low. He flew it into the trees instead of stalling it trying the make the road, looks like.

In my plank, I like to climb out flat and fast in case this kind of thing should happen. That's what he did here. It's always better to hit the ground under control than out of control.

I believe that's a VeeDub on that plane, this kind of thing just happens more with VeeDubs for some reason which is why I don't really like the idea of flying behind one.

the engine sounded crappy on start up, but then cleared up, only to sputter again....acted like my old jeep when I had debris in my fuel tank. He walked away...did a good job.

I don't understand why he didn't land in that field straight ahead to the left of the trees he went in to..

I thought he was lined up perfect then he turned towards the trees..

Man the road would have been a great choice . Things happen fast thought . Engine failure happened to me one time . Fortunately I was able to make a private strip without injury to plane or myself or student . I don't believe car engines belong in airplanes though for good reason . That video shows number 1001 .Bladescrape

I had an engine out in my ultralight some years ago, engine quit suddenly like it had been shut off (it was due to a wiring error by me). I was on downwind for the RW I just took off from tho so just glided it in for a landing.

I also am not real thrilled about auto engine conversions, even tho many of them work really well these days (eg. the Mazda rotary and a few other smaller engines). The problem is the cost ends up being close to what a dedicated aviation engine is once it's all said and done. Then you have to try to get insurance for it, then try to fly it reliably and then sell the plane later when it's time to quit or get something else.

I fly in front of a Rotax 912 these days and I really wouldn't trade it for any other motor. It just runs like a sewing machine and gives me great super HD FPV flying

I see massive power lines in that field. That could have been pretty bad... He was too low and slow to try to dive for the highway looks like, could have been a stall/spin there which would have been fatal...
