Flew my first scale heli this evening

This is nothing compared with the large and magnificent helis normally showcased in this section, but I finished my first scale build and test flight this evening.

A couple of years ago I acquired another RR member's 450 sized Jet Ranger project consisting of a nice fiberglass fuselage and TT Mini Titan mechanics. I built out the mechanics in pod and boom configuration, flybarless with a BeastX controller. This flew so well that I just kept flying it, never moving forward with the scale build. This past weekend while at a local hobby shop, the owner made me a deal on the Super Cobra conversion kit that I just could not ignore. So Sunday I started the conversion. Quite easy, it actually almost fell together. So tonight, just before sunset, I decided it was time for a test flight. First off, even with the raised tail rotor, it flew pretty much like the original pod and boom configuration. Time to make some circuits, and wow, this thing looks so cool. OK, I'm hooked. Nothing special, almost just like shaking a box of parts together. But dang, this is fun.

I have enough Mini Titan parts stockpiled to make another airframe. This will go into the Jet Ranger fuselage, and be more of an actual scale build than the Super Cobra.Gerry Cullan,

I will have to take some photos. I currently have white tail rotor blades on it and Edge FBL main blades, so the blades don't look scale when it is just sitting there. But in flight you can't really tell.

Future plans are to remove the tape that they recommend to close up the fuselage halfs and use miniature self tapping screws such as they use for the canopy glass to close up the fuselage seams.

I'm also going to get some pilot heads/upper torsos that I can put on top of the battery packs. In flight it sort of looks strange with an empty cockpit.

This was a fun project and definitely fits in with my "old fart" flying style.

The Jet Ranger will be more of a project, as the fuselage is in white gel coat. I'll have to decide on and apply the paint scheme. The Mini Tital mechanics have proven to be quite reliable. I currently have two airframes flying, both FBL, with one a pod & boom and the other the scale Super Cobra. I have two more unbuilt kits tucked away as spares or future projects.

One poster welcomed me to the "Dark Side". I prefer to think that I've finally "Seen the light!" Great fun!

Hover set? Ha, I popped up over the bushes nap of the earth style and made some great straffing runs last evening. I scared the living daylights out of those poor little grasshoppers!Gerry Cullan,

Scale is truly addictive. Are you having any heating problems with your mini titan in the fuse ? I'm running stock motor and esc in a A109 scale body and have some issues.

No heat issues so far. I'm also running the stock motor and ESC. I use Thunder Power 3-cell 2250 mah 45C Lipo packs exclusively in my 450 sized helis. I limit my flights to 5 minutes with a very gentle flight style. Typically, motor, ESC, and battery are barely above ambient temberature. The Super Cobra fuselage has a number of openings that probably help with air flow.Gerry Cullan,

I'm using the 13T pinion with 2200 MAH 3S set up. It get's extremely hot after one flight. If I try to fly back to back packs I get ESC shut off and piro to the ground. I haven't spent any time modifying since I now spend most all of my time flying a 700.

Nothing Like A Well Dressed Heli!!

I had one with the Cobra fuselage on it and had a ball with it!!
Sorry I ever sold it...

You are right about the conversion kit. TT really did a great job on it.. I was nothing less then totally impressed with how everything needef was included and the manual very clear!!
The addiction has begun and spreads rapidly..

Now you know what a well dressed heli looks and flies like.. sort of hard not to do another, then another, then you start looking for the "next" subject while you ate just starting the latest!!
Have fun and enjoy...keep scaring those grasshoopers, I won't tell..

Interesting thought about the pinion, as a one-tooth difference can effect head speed and amp draw in a significant manner.

All of my Mini Titans have the stock pinion, which I suspect is the 12 tooth one. I'll confirm that later this evening once I get home.Gerry Cullan,

I finally had the opportunity to take a couple of photos of my Apache. Nothing special, but is my first scale project and has provided the inspiration to get going on the Jet Ranger fuselage. The TT instructions say to close the fuselage seams with tape. I did that initially but didn't like the look of it. So I used 000 x 2 mm sheet metal screws to close the seam. At least to me, they look better than the tape.
