Good write up Unclejane....
That's what I call...Good enough.lol....
The Goldilocks Zone.
Exactly. And this is one of those old-school types of knowledge that may also end up in the history books with the 2-stroke engine, unfortunately.

But even as venerable as nitro/IC tech is, a lot of guys don't know how to set the mixture correctly on a 2-stroke. And probably most of those are what give nitro and even gas its bad rep. as an, er, explosive technology lol.

When I flew 2-strokes in full scale it became paramount to learn how to set a mixture properly. "tuners" didn't stay in the air very long and usually ended up in the trees or worse with a stopped prop or worse.

I still get pushback even today when I talk about tuning on the knee even from nitro luminaries. And they still scratch their heads wondering why they need 23% oil in their fuels and still can't seem to make a set of bearings last longer than a few months....

So this knowledge may have already disappeared into the mists of time along with Clarence Lee and his excellent work informing us about how to make an engine last and run right....

But it's all good, if you're racing or really need peak performance and engine longevity isn't a concern, "tuning" isn't inherently a bad thing. Just another option we have with our needle valves .

Here is your answer;
Nitro helis are like dinosaurs, it'll take something BIG to kill them off, battery power ain't it!

Only when new battery technology becomes affordable to RC let alone available will nitros slowly die out.
Until batteries can give the flight time of of a nitro it may stand a chance for a lot less people to fly Nitros.
The new Nitro engines are childs play and are very reliable. This a hobby, its not a necessity so we all can enjoy it small amounts, meaning it is not like fosil fuel cars that that people have to use. In addition we need that sound, that smoke, that flight time, that fill up and fly back to back. If it does die out GASSERS will take its place, wont stop me from putting 5% Nitro methane in my gas with some smoke.

Hey laughingstill, WHICH ONE WOULD BE FASTER? You never answered that question. It wasn't a hard one.

Ok I will bite, which one is faster??? I think the IRCHA Speed Cup proved that without a doubt. 152mph for the electric, 93 for the nitro.....ball in your court.

Post a couple threads to my lipo bashing.

Bite on that

The accusation is a lie.

It's an open invitation by the way.
If I trash lipos in every thread and never miss a chance to bash lipos...it should be easy.

The only time you'll ever see it is in a couple threads months ago that were specifically asking about nitro and the E fan bois/nitro thread trolls were trashing the threads with their nonsense.

Post away

I love this thread. The never-ending debate of N vs. E. Each side is making very good arguments. Very polarizing and intriguing to say the last. At the end of the day we all have something in common... The love for flying R/C helis - regardless of power system.

For the record, I like both but since the tuning argument seems to be a common argument against Nitro, I'll add that E has equivalent challenges. How many times has a bad solder job caused a failure/crash? Soldering is a skill that few master (correctly) and is a pain IMHO. Of all the E-related activities, this is the one I hate the most. Charging is a close second.

My 10+ years of nitro has never been as challenging as it's being portrayed. Instead, a very enjoyable aspect of R/C.

Flame suit on. Let the games begin.

I was referring to the question that was asked in this thread.
I already know all about speed runs and why electric is preferred there. Good for a chest thump though.

The thing about electric is if you could find a motor with similar power to the nitro engine then the flight times could well be comparable. It just seems because they can be made massively powerful brushless motors have been made that way.

I got rid of t-rex 500 because 4 1/2 minute flights is not my cup of tea.

What I don't know is if a brushless motor of 3HP can produce the torque of a 3HP nitro engine.

Hey Mckrackin, remember this thread?
https://rc.runryder.com/t721112p1/

Obviously just a bit of fun and it starts out people are doing so. After about a dozen posts, the 1st e-guy makes the 1st negative statement. No big deal though...all in fun. It's appropriate IMO.

Then on page 2 about 1/2 way down comes this.
Somebody must want to get their post count up
Direct personal attack with zero value. How's that for class? I don't think I conversed with him in months if not a year prior to that. Talk about holding a grudge for losing a debate. Interesting part was that I had only 3 posts there by that point...like post count means something to me. LOL

Anyway, it's interesting to note that thread, same as this one, had a lot of posts with pics and info on people's new Nitro toys. No such ones with electric??? I think most realize how pathetic that actually is. Thus the insecurity that leads to personal attack.
Too funny.

Oh, and BTW, guess who has the highest post count in this thread.

Uncle Janes writeup pretty much sums up how I tune and I didn't even know it had a name or was a viable recognized technique. I just thought I was keeping my stuff a bit rich to keep my engine alive. I have seen a lot of needle fiddlers at the field though, cracks me up. Mostly airplane dudes. Fiddle, deadstick, land and repeat.

That little boat would look nice up on my bow BTW...real relevant here too huh.
I don't see any Turbine helis there.
And, my wife doesn't work. No need.

We go from which is better (or in this case is Nitro dying lol) to who is better. Nice!
