I bit, too...
... on the $199 "liquidation" of the G20 HD. And I'm a couple of years older than you, Arctic - we BOTH should have known better!

Have had the following issues:
1) tore up a fan due to FHS stripping out on the fan shroud mounting plate. Had to drill/tap out to 5mm screws. Hope the SS replacements hold better.
2) Lost my (increasing hard to find) SAB 630s due to elevator ball link backing out of the swash. Ensured during build that these had CA backing them up, but the thread length into the swash is minimal at best. Design issue.
3) Have NOT been able to get the tail to settle down. Running stock G20 (probably most of the problem) and have tried two different gyros and two different servos with same wagging, in spite of gain settings.

Waiting on parts - again - and trying metal swash (R90 upgrade from Century - rolling the dice again...), metal tail pitch plate from Esprit (hoping to remove the flex I get with stock), and, of course, the usual main and spindle shafts. Last impact took out the roll servo gears, so waiting for them, too.

I'm trying to get out of nitro, telling myself it will cost less and be less messy going gas, but having a hard time convincing myself at this point. My one bastion of hope is my Vario Bell H-13 (47G) which has been trouble-free for over 7 years. (Hope I didn't just jinx myself...)

Enough ranting for now - parts arrive on Monday, so will try to make a silk purse from this sow's ear...

I wouldn't quit the gasser idea. Might be better to get a whiplash and it comes with parts that won't fail you pay more upfront but you save time and money in the end.
or dump another 2-300 into this pile and it should do well.
making the wrong choices sucks and I have made few at least you learn something in the process

Funny thing is I have two Predators. One is a gasser with a Hanson 3D Max Pro in it and the other is a Wren turbine conversion kit. Maybe I'm just lucky but I have had no problems with either of mine. Are the older Predators less problematic than the new Radikals

I have had a few century radikals and predators all gassers and I have had only the clutch breakage problems. once I would upgrade to the larger clutch they offered I have no issues.

RM3, Sorry about your crash! Did they do anything for you when you contacted them about the blade grip? What was the head speed it was turning? Glade no one was hurt!Bill Whittaker

No, this was not my crash...this is Raja, he is a prominent figure in the gasser community. Not sure what came of this...I'm sure he would be glad to PM you on the details.

All I know about the situation is based on what I have read on youtube comments and here on RR.

if you want the bottom end about Raja's grip failure, in short Raja crashed and rebuilt his heli before the Grip failed in a later flight, after that first crash he had no claim on the warranty for his grip failure, there are many other circumstances to the story that are not on Century

swampd20155,, you said you can not get the Tail on yours to settle down, if you are running a head speed much over 1850 try the larger 10T Pulley on the Tail Output Shaft to slow down that Tail's Speed

When I hear " ...in short Raja crashed and rebuilt his heli before the Grip failed in a later flight," I can't help but think that plastic is not the best for a visual inspection of substrate structure for stress separation. I was wondering if this head had been involved in a previous crash. I have to assume by this comment that the grip in question had internally failed but was not visually detectable. That's unfortunately the world of composites.

Anyone looking to unload their Century G20 parts or complete heli let me know. I'm still flying mine (more like hovering mine from one end of the field to another). I still haven't gone into idle up 1 or 2 yet. I love my G20.

If you want the long end of the story so you get it right
No I didn't crash, I had a minor tip over cause by using the 1005 program instead of the G20 in my radio. Everything was the same except the ailerons were reversed. I spooled up and it started to tip, I corrected and the blade tips started to touch the ground and I immediately cut the power and the heli never left the ground, tipped over, crashed or anything like that.

The only damaged was a slightly bent spindle and slightly twisted plastic head on the metal base - that's it. There was absolutely no blade grip damage whatsoever, but those grips at the time were from the hawk 30 machine, only 4mm thick on each side of the blade.

I ordered the 2 parts and got it back in the air. Flew for another MONTH before one day while flying heavier SAB blades (for better autos) the blade pulled through the grip in the middle of the 2nd flight. I still have that piece here, I keep it as a souvenir to remind me of the near miss I had that day when the blade flew by me about 10 feet away.

I was not the only person this happened to, there were several others and I've seen some pictures, the break on theirs is the same as the break on my grip. First one half of the bottom side of the hole breaks off then the top peels off. There was NO HIDDEN damage, the part was just not strong enough and Century realized this after repeated failures and designed the grip thicker as I told Paul on the phone when I spoke with him, MA grip is 6.5mm, Century Hawk 30 only 4mm, need to make it thicker and they made a recall on the machine if you remember with the announcement here: "Stop flying the Radikal G20 LT until further notice".

Don't believe people that tell you there was hidden damage, that was just a theory they came up with before the other radikals started throwing blades (I personally know 2 of the others throwing blades) after which the recall was made.

" That's unfortunately the world of composites"

true, as also with metals, anything can fail, and to add Century did reinforce the grips in question to hold a test of 850 pounds, not 1 problem since, but keep in mind Raja did crash first, before, before the grip failed

bottom line Raja, is, you hit a blade on the ground hard enough to bend the Spindle, at that point you have no warranty, and no right to blame CenturyJim

Raja, besides all that, Century told people to run only 620's on the LT head, and any blades larger than 620s use the HD head,, James was told to run 640's on his, and run a HS of 2300, he did throw a 640 blade at 2300, where you said you were only doing 1750,,,, but you crashed FIRST !!

Some of these old grips are still flying today, it seems very funny that its just you (YOU) that keeps crying, sounds like a vendetta to me, yet as said, your buddy on podcast did say that you (YOU) told them you crashed twice,, the other crash was on a auto landing as you told them

Raja, you need to concentrate on fixing your problems with your Whiplash
