So a question about high speed and blade size......................
O.k. so Im not sure if its been covered or not, but as I get set for the Ircha speed cup and I am practising flying smooth and fast I cant help but wonder......
Why are 716mm blades better than 696mm blades? with 18* of pitch and 2200HS I would think the 696mm blades would put less amp draw on the motor and allow for more head speed, also less drag and friction... am I wrong? As far as I can tell, all the speed machines use 710 - 720mm blades, but why is it better? more stability? slower cyclic for smoother flight? or the thrust from a larger blade?

I understand a larger blade will accelerate you faster from slow to fast, but on a long extended approach wouldnt you benefit more from higher head speed, less drag.......... ?????? I would love to hear any thoughts on the matter...

I answered my own question, today I got some test flights in on the Diabolo, and first the rail 716s with a slightly warm fully charged pack... pretty quick, Then swapped with the Whiplash and put the rail 696s on with a slightly warm fully charged pack, and wow, it was definitely faster! I also like the 716s on my Whiplash better for all around flying... so there you have it.

I would assume if you had unlimited power like 70c batteries on 12s or bump up to 14s then the 716 would be the ticket, but running 12s 45c I cant whirl the blades to the headspeed I want under full load, so the smaller blades is less drag and less weight and easier on the powertrain so therefore more headspeed and more flight speed.... simple as that!

Why back to the 716's when your 696's were faster? Just curious.

Thanks

Well to be honest, the 696's felt faster at the local club, but then my first run with 696's and I was soooo nervous only did 98mph, I had one more chance to get a test run in so I put the 716's back on to see how it felt and then 121mph... now alot of that was me being nervous and not going full pitch and also very shaky............. So at this point i cant tell you for sure which set is faster..... but i noticed everybody else running 710 and up, so I figured they know something I don't and have plenty of experience...... so when in rome :-)"Need More Parts"

Gotcha. I bet it would make you kind of nervous to send your heli out until it's a dot. Then bring it back straight, and level all while going balls out. I bet their is a lot of hoping, and praying going on.

Thanks for the reply, and good luck.

By the way. What happened to Santiago's Diabolo?
