Hi Guys,

The club I want to join (had been a member in the past) recently lost their field due to a complaint by one single idiot neighbor (not even that close to the field) after being in that location for 18 years. They have a new field now and have a noise restriction of 90db. My Spectra with a g230 came in at 96db at 12 ft. A bit over the limit and I don't want to be the reason they lose a new field. What can be done to limit the noise output. It was suggested to put on an extension to the muffler which would be an expansion can. I really do not want to modify the mufflers themselves, not after paying over $100 for each. One is a Century V2 and the other I can't recall the make right now.

Are there any off the shelf solutions to quiet them down a bit?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Silencers.
You might contact Todd at QuickDraw and see if they can make you a silencer to fit the pipe you are running.
Their silencers work very well on their QuickDraw pipes. Just not sure on a different pipe.

Is the Century V2 one of the louder Century mufflers or one of the quieter ones? I forget. I'm sure someone here will know. I think the RJX is one of the quieter mufflers . Check out Gas Powered thoughts on HH . I think Carey did a whole article on the various mufflers available at the time.

Yes that's correct
The century v2 is one of the loudest mufflers checking in at 96 db in idle up 2. You can take the edge off a bit but installing the screw in piece that it comes with, not to lower the db's to 90 but to make it easier on your ears. It will probably only be down if anything by 1 db.

RJX is one of the quietest mufflers out there, I ran my tests a while back and called the topic "muffler judgement day". However, I believe its still around 91 to 92db, maybe 90db with slow head speed.

The one that came in below 90db at 88 or so was the zimmerman rear muffler on the 1005, but good luck trying to get one of those they are hard to come by and they are not a direct fit.

Helis fly lower than airplanes and the sound from them doesn't carry as far. I believe you would be OK with something in the low 90's range.

to a complaint by one single idiot neighbor
next time that SOB is out cutting his lawn with his mower or weedeater, have him ticketed for exceeding the 90db noise restriction by over 10dbs...everytime he cuts his lawn too...then have him ticketed for failure to maintain his lawn by not cutting it cause his mower is too loud.

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

Although slightly funny it does ring true to the situation at my local summer field. There was a noise complaint after 15 years of flying. The main culprit was the increasing popularity of the BIG Gasser airplanes with minimal muffler systems hovering with their lack of adequate mufflers and just as bad the ripping of their props,,,[exceeding the sound barrier at the tip of the props} I do not remember the actual DB restrictions set at the time ,,I do know my gasser heli's were fine! Thank goodness...

no measurements but I am pretty sure my G290RC with an RJX is quieter than the various Nitros in my club

Trouble is
The lawn mower noise is acceptable and known to be OK by all. In other words I can mow my lawn at 8am, (I never do by my neighbor fires up right at 8am on Saturday next to my bedroom window!!) or I can mow my lawn at 8pm even in the dark (with floodlights) and no-one will ever complain.

On the side note I would never fire up my gasser after dark in the back yard, only electrics if need be. Just something about gassers that they are not lawn mowers and they "might" disturb the neighbors however I think they are used to me flying my helis in the back yard they probably wouldn't.

If you end up with buying a new muffler, stay away from the V5. I run it without a tip and it's incredibly loud. Maybe the tip will decrease sound level but for better performance I prefer not to use it. Our field is out of the city so I don't care how lout it is. My fellow pilots are not complaining. Yet.

I agree to Raja on the RJP pipe. It's quiet.

I run the RJX muffler and it is quiet but I did have the muffler split in half. The mufflers are around 50 bucks last time I checked.

Do you have a pic of the side of your heli showing the whole pipe layout? Also would need a pic kinda close showing the back of the frames with the sides of it included. Might have an idea that may work? Going to go find the topic of the guy that gave me the dimensions of the stinger of the pipe.

What I'd really like is a wrap around like the old Zimmerman on the 1005. Have the pipe on the back of the frame instead of having a gigantic thing hanging off the side. I'd buy one in a second if offered.

Are the Zimmerman wrap around like on my 1005 still available? Do they make them anymore? I know the mongoose uses one too.
I have had my Zimmerman on my 1005 I would say at least 7 years and no problem. I have heard 26cc and up they are a restriction from old posts here. But they are quiet and very reliable on my 1005 with a Hanson 26cc. !!!!

I'd love to get one for my Spectra. I've had the standard "can" muffler since new, some 6+ years now with no problems whatsoever, and am not particularly fond of other side-mounted mufflers and their associated loosening problems that I read about often.

I could use less decibels, especially at the new flying field where most of the helis and planks are electric. Besides me, there are a couple of nitro planes and one T-Rex 700 nitro heli. Everyone else at the field flies electrics. My heli is the loudest beast at the field, something I am definitely not proud of.
