I am a new owner of a tired and old EX-II w/ SSR-VII rotorhead. It has an HPM mechanism, OS91SZ with Funtech F3C pipe, Futaba S9255 servos and a GY611 gyro. It came with the fiberglass canopy but it was already discolored and cracked in the front. The heli came with some mods I am not very fond of like colorful items here and there, Raptor landing skids tie-strapped to the frame (??), some metal servo horns etc.

I don't plan on spending high $$$ on this kit, just a simple rebuild and some mods here and there would suffice

As I got it, it looked like this:

Everything that was supposed to be shiny wasn't and everything that wasn't supposed to be shiny was!
I began tearing everything down, inspecting and cleaning as I go. Here's a shot of the main gear and the autorotation gear.

The E3 one-way bearing was full of gunk and gummed up stuff, which was surprising that it was still moving although a bit heavy.

On the rotorhead side of things, majority of the end links need replacement since some are worn out and some were installed facing the wrong way. Inside the blade grips, I found more gunk on the thrust bearing:

And here's the Funtech pipe.

I tried to work on the canopy by removing some decals and buffing it with some polishing compound. It was alot shinier after but the discoloration was still present on some locations (not that clear on the photos but very obvious in person)

plus the front damage cannot be completely covered up by any decal by Hirobo so I will send it tomorrow to someone who can repaint it in its original white color. I also plan on painting the inside black to hide the yellowish finish of the fiberglass

After cleaning and reassembling the main gear set, this is what it looked like:

With the head reassembled and cleaned, I got to the frame set. I removed all beauty washers by the old owner along with the HPM system. I chose to put in a 120 SWM for this heli and install DS610s from my Freya Evo as I want to use my ReactorX2 voltage regulator. Here's a pic of the frame partially assembled

Nice job so far bro. The Hirobo machines have always been works of art to me. Nice to see you bring it back to its original glory :-)

Nice build.
This should be a good flying machine when you're done. Both of my Evo 90's have swm conversions and I love they way they feel. Raptor gear? Did you scold the previous owner!

Thanks everyone for having interest in this simple rebuild!
Raptor gear? Did you scold the previous owner!
lol nope the seller was a genuinely good guy. I think he just lost interest in this heli that's all.

After doing servo placements, wiring the gyro + rudder servo and cleaning plus servicing the fuel tank this is what it looked like:

The GY520 looks out of place on a heli this big but I wanted to avoid the clutter of the amp and use higher voltage than 5V all throughout. The wiring in front is all jumbled as it's not yet done so forgive me. As I discovered I am missing some collars for my SWM conversion as it came with a Freya Evo. As it turns out I need collars for the radius stay and the pieces that attach to the side of the frames. I'll look for them on some local hardware stores but I doubt I'll find any. Worst case scenario is ordering parts from Japan. I'm also considering machining them from aluminum blocks. the thing that I don't like about Freyas is the high parts count. dizzying is a bit of an understatement.

and a beauty shot of the SSR-VII:

I know it's not the best head out there but it still is beautiful to look at. I might consider an SSZ-IV or SSL rotorhead in the future if this turns out to be THAT bad.

The machining and blue anodizing on Hirobo parts is amazing. Have you thought about turning that into a FBL head?

Yes I agree.

It has crossed my mind a couple of times but the blue parts count would be lower lol

If this head flies as bad as everyone says I might get an SSL head if budget permits as well

updates:

I went to the local Hirobo dealer yesterday and got some parts for the EX. Most of the items I wanted to buy wasn't on stock so I placed an order on some them.

I replaced the old hacked cooling fan cover with a D3 item that didn't need trimming to fit the OS91's head.

The collars I needed were also not in stock so I fabricated some spacers out of spare CF frames from my Align kits. They were 2mm in thickness which is just what I needed. Here's a pic:

Now I just need to look for a 5mm material for the anti rotation bracket collar's replacement. I ordered the orig collars as well so I might just wait for them to arrive.

Here are more pictures of my progress so far:

spent 2 nights trying to buff and polish the Funtech pipe. This is the best that I can do (sorry for the fingerprints, but even without them its still not perfect)

THX: thanks for viewing

update:

got my refurbished canopy, then went to the hobby shop to claim my ordered decals, among other things.. The pics were taken when I was half way done with the decals.

I was surprised that the E3 decals even look better in person

Hopefully my next post will include a video of flying this heli

After carefully inspecting your thread, I have noticed a lot of flaws in your rebuild. I suggest you send this helicopter to me for an initial flight test to make sure it is safe. I just crashed my Evo90 this weekend so I shouldn't be due for another crash for quite some time now.

Ok I'll PM you my bank account, and you can send the money for shipment lmao

On a serious note, sorry for your crash. I heard it's pretty hard to get parts there so I don't know how you guys manage. I hope you get the Evo back in shape again

Thanks, it was just a bad auto so hardly any energy left in blades. Only damage was landing gear, tail fin, and tail blades. Already fixed!

a little update:

decided to toss around the heli a bit after tuning/final setup to get a feel on how it behaves on the 2nd tank. I'm using relatively low headspeed since I'm not that familiar with the included white Hirobo fiberglass blades' maximum headspeed.

Do any of you had a failure in flight due to too much high headspeeds?

I'm also thinking of changing the gearing to 8.00 or 8.20 as I think the 7.7 one is asking too much on the 91SZ on 15% wildcat.

here's the vid:

What a transformation!
I have two EX-II SWM SSZ-III models myself that are currently undergoing restoration. This thread provides inspiration and motivation but I doubt if I can make it look as good as yours.
