After having an issue with tail authority on my AS350 with rex700 mechs and lower head speed, I started doing some research on a tail fix. I didn't want to make custom tail blades, or have to run longer blades, as they just didn't look right on the heli.

I found that Align is now making a speed up kit for rex700 mechs. It ups the tail drive ratio from 4.3 to 4.95:1. I installed it in my AS350 and it worked like a charm! This has allowed me to run 1400rpm HS with great tail authority. I may even try 1300rpm and see how it holds up. Here are the part numbers if anyone is interested in doing the mod for their scale machine.

You're very welcome Stan

Cap: They changed out the auto gear to 104 tooth and the spur gear to a 21 tooth and left the umbrella gears alone (they are still 1:1 ratio). This gave them a 4.95:1 ratio. The auto and spur gear are mod 1 slant config and the umbrella gears are the new black align gears.

IMHO, there is no need to upgrade the other half of the unit for scalers ie; tail box gears/shaft, this was done because the 3D guys were breaking tail shafts at the rotor hub step down section running insane head speeds. It's a nice upgrade because it eliminates the machined step down in the shaft for the blade hub, so the tail shaft is the same diameter at the gears as it is in the rotor hub, but is really not needed by us slow poke flyers. I'm actually running a rex600 tail box in my AS350 because it fit in the boom very nicely. Catch you guys later, I'm off to the field for more shake down runs on the AS350 before details/paint. I may post a vid later today.

Great! They should do that for 500 and 600 size as well! Oh... And make some tail cases for having tail rotor on the left! Come on align, show us scale guys some more love....

Retrofit the rex700 main/auto gear set into the 600 mechs.

Tail speed up !
I done similar with gear changing on a trex 700 using mod 1 velocity 90 auto gear which has 111t and changed the gear on the front gear set. I can't remember to exactly what tooth it was but I will check. It gave something like 6:1 ratio which should give good tail authority.

Interesting info. Did you have to move the boom holder back in the airframe to accommodate the larger gear set?

So, my buddy won't be winning any awards for videography this year... The vid was blurry and out of frame a lot, so I didn't post it. I flew her 3 more times today and played with the head and tail gains. She's dialed in, flying great and the tail holds fine. This mod was well worth the money spent!

No I purchased a off the shelf nylon gear and removed the gear from the standard front gear shaft and press fitted it and then drilled and pinned it like standard.
The auto gear just misses the clutch bell and pinion nothing more. I did not move the gear case all in standard position. Not at home at the moment so can't check exact details, I will post some pics another day.

Hope this helps. The only other mod was to remove some width off the auto gear hub to line up the main shaft bolt.

Cool, thanks for the info. It's always nice to have options. Are you sure about the 66 tooth spur gear? With a 111 tooth auto gear and a 66 tooth spur you end up with a 1.68: drive ratio.

I will say that the new align parts make this a 15 minute upgrade with no mods required. This new gear gives you a 15% increase in tail speed which seems to have done the trick for me.

No the nylon66 was a spec of the nylon have removed it now to stop confusion. The gear I think was a 17 or 18 tooth. So gear ratio is 111/17 = 6.52:1 or 111/18= 6.16:1 or may of even been 19t which = 5.84.

Like I said I will check next time I go home and post some pics. May not be a 5 min fix but I enjoy playing and doing things others have not .

Darren.

Gotta agree with you It's always fun when you can find a fix that saves you cash and employs parts that you have in your heli spares.
