Last fall I had to attend a school near Burlington Wisconsin. Had dinner in an upscale restaurant, and when asked if I'd like anything from the bar, I ordered my favorite 'neat'. She gave me a very puzzled look, and asked me to repeat myself. Again, I said 'neat'. She says '....ok.... would you like ice in it?' I replied 'No'. She then asked if I wanted coke in it. Again 'No'. I then went on to explain that I wanted to have whiskey poured from the bottle into a glass, and brought to me. Then she sorta got pissy, but what was I to do?

Is there a new term for 'neat' that I'm not aware of???

There, their and they're. It's really that simple.

I have heard it referred to as "straight up" before. And even how many "fingers" of measure. But she wouldn't have known what that meant either!

I use to work with a guy that ordered it that way ... usually 2 or 3 fingers and he always got what he wanted.

I have never had any problems ordering a nice glass of single malt neat. Anywhere... Sounds like you got a newbie....

Hahaha

My table was very near the bar. The weird part was when my waitress went back and talked to the bartender about my order. That's when she came back and asked if I wanted it with Coke in it (which sounded like she asked if I wanted it with coconut. But that part of the conversation is a WHOLE other story). Anyway, it was almost like the bartender didn't have a clue either. Weird....

she probably figured "Neat" meant without hair, bugs, or spots on the glass.

I say drink/eat somewhere else. If the server and bartender had no clue what "neat" meant then I can only imagine what the kitchen staff must be like...

This reminds me of ordering a plain coffee here in the Seattle area. They usually ask, do you want decaf, cream, sugar, no cal sweeter, etc. My buddy visiting from Oklahoma finally said, "Just give me a f-ing, coffee". Now we simply order a "JFC"..
