I've got an older 10X radio, with a Duralite LiIon battery cassette. recently when I was charging the battery, the charger gave me an error message that the battery was disconnected. I powered up the radio and the battery is working, but now it seems I can't charge it. Duralite does not have the complete cassettes anymore. They sell the battery for you to solder it into the cassette. Can anybody give me some pointers on how to fix the problem? The battery may need replacing anyway, but the charging part is what has me concerned.

Thanks in advance.
Rafael

Rafael,
I'm not sure about the cassette from Duralite but inside the standard JR cassette you will find a small printed circuit board.... Aside from the white connector and the black charge jack that are soldered onto the board, you'll find only one electronic component.....although there is a "diode" symbol on the bottom of the board, I believe that it is a "fuse" because it passes current in both directions when tested with an ohm meter and the markings on the cylinder say "buss 5A" ... So , I think it is a 5 am fuse (but not sure). I have an extra cassette so I took it apart to make these observations....

Been there, done that and old enough to know better.....

A typical 5s JST-XH balance connector will fit on those pins really nicely. Then you can use a LiPo or LiFe battery pack in place of the cartridge.

Just keep in mind that the pics that I provided were to the original cassette with the JR 10X radio.... ie, 1100 NiCd batteries......

Hangtimes.com may be able to fix it for you. They also sell replacement paces for the cassette.

Juan:
I haven't opened the Duralite case. I've opened another case and i've seen what you pictured there. I'll take it to Radio Shack or similar store to see if they can point me in the right direction. Otherwise online at hangtime or Radio South. I was in the process of cycling the duralite batteries, because they were already "suspect".

Justin:
Are you saying that I do not need the little board inside the cassette? I can see 3 positive and 2 nagtive leads. Is that all that the readio needs? How long have you been using the radio like this?

AceDude:
Went to hangtimes and could not find parts or cassetes, just the battery packs to solder in. Also went to Radio South and the complete cassette replacement with nicds is listed but out of stock, like almost everywhere else.

I found a replacement cassete with batteries. I'll try to repair the small circuit board to have a backup battery.

thanks to all

Rafael

A few days ago I made an order with DigiKey for a few 5A board-mounted fuses. They arrived yesterday. last night I went to the shop and soldered one to the Duralite cassette. It looks the same as the fuse I took out with the exception of the writing. the digikey has no writing on the sides.

Now I can re-charge the Duralite cassette and repair another cassette i had laying around.

Thanks for all the suggestions
