Does anyone know of a battery capacity checker that is a stand alone unit rather than associated with a charger.

I know you can get ones which read out % capacity but I would like one that reads actual, e.g battery capacity of pack say 2400mAh, read out from checker after charge say 2100mAh, assuming pack does not take a full capacity charge.

Thank you in advance.

The battery checkers that show a fuel gauge are based on cell voltage which is not reliable. If you want to display the actual capacity, it needs to be measured during a discharge. You can use an inline wattage meter like the WattsUp et al. That will give you mah consumed during the flight. But it won't give you the packs total capacity.

f you interested in finding packs total capacity, I would a logging charger like a Powerlab. Watch the discharge live on the PC. Right the near the end of the charge, the voltage will drop off sharply and rapidly. The pack is done at that point and the mah delivered can be reviewed.

The one from A main is a rebadged Hyperion.

So Hyperion and ProTek are selling equipment that's useless than correct? Could please explain why the battery checkers they sell are unreliable? Because if that's the case, I need to get my money back.

The Hyperion (and other re-badged models) use a LiPo's resting voltage to approximate the fuel level. This is the same method used by chargers like the Cellpro, Powerlabs and others. This relationship between resting voltage and state of charge SoC is stored in a table referred to as a fuel table. Here is an example from the Powerlabs.

About five years ago, a single fuel table could be used to accurately predict the state of charge on most hobby grade LiPos on the market. As the IR dropped and the cells evolved, variability in the resting voltage vs SoC began to surface. Not long after that, it became apparent that except for fully charged, resting voltage could not longer be used a reliable method to determine SoC.

Because of this, FMA added a feature to create custom fuel maps for the user's packs. The charger cycles the pack and creates fuel table that is accurate for that pack.

The Hyperion uses a static fuel table which cannot be edited. It may be accurate for some packs. But its most certainly not accurate for all packs. Measuring the mah pulled from the pack is the most reliable method. The second most reliable method is to note the mah put back in the pack during the charge. The second method also has some issues, but is far more reliable than the generic fuel tables in cell checkers.
