Hey guys,
having a strange noise (yes scary, right?)from my tailrotor on the big Vario huey. So, I took all the mechs out to check everything, and on the input side of the tail rotor gearbox is a universal joint. It has noticeable movement (Rotation). and I don't know how to get into this to see if it is normal (which I don't think it is) or not.. There is a single pin on the gearbox side of this joint, but not a thru pin?.. How does this come apart? or does it?
Anyone ever have one of these apart?
The gearboxes all look good as do the shafts... but this u-joint has me a bit concerned....
here's the part;

Coptercapt The ears on the dog bone has melted the black plastic part. You will need to replace the shaft going into the gear box. You may be able to save the dog bone the alum. part if you don't scare it removing the plastic. A little lube will help the new one last.

after further investigation (thanks Darrell) I found that the part had actually fused itself inside. Finally got it apart, and I see that Vario does have a replacement half.. It looks to be metal not plastic? I should be able to drill out the old pin, or cut the plastic off the shaft and replace (as the new part is held on w/grubs.)

vario tail rotor gearbox question
What you need is vario part #49/56 and is held in place with two set screws on the input gear in the tail gearbox. Just take the half of the gearbox off and you will be able to get at the gear. I would put a little grease in the new articulated gearbox connector(female end) when assembling to lessen the chance of friction and melting the part.

On the aluminum gearbox, there is a hole for you to access the grub screws which hold the gear on the input shaft. You can see it in your pic. Taking off the cover will help you install the new shaft and push the gear in place, but, you more than likely will have to take the gearbox apart and rebuild it so its correct.

I see that, Joe, but in the catalogue I only see the shaft/joint option for 5mm.? I measured my shaft and it is 6.59mm.. so I ordered he part (49/61) that attaches to the shaft (6mm) with two grub screws on the u-joint half. this will work correct?
I cut the plastic part (Failed) off and pulled out the pin.

coptercptn, When parts fuse themselves together, it is caused by heat generated by the parts being too tight
In the case of tail drive shafts with plastic fittings, when you assemble allow 1mm of play, and add some lub, the 1mm is a must on all Vario tail shafts, it allows for expansion

Vario tail rotor gear box question
OK... The female shaft that is going into the gearbox has a step in the shaft so in wont slide into the gear box (male end) be it the plastic or metal gearbox. The gear on the other end keeps the shaft from coming out of the gearbox, not like the main gearbox that has a small screw on each side of the output shaft holding it in. This is why there is two holes in the metal tail gear box so you can get at the set screws on the gears, for the input and output gears. The main gearbox output shaft is longer than the shaft going into the tail gearbox. FYI

Sorry about instructions on the two halves of the tail gear box. I was thinking of the plastic box when I replied, the metal one is is different as to setting up.

You need the 49/60

It apears you did not put grease in the joint which will cause the failure you had.
You need to use the vario grease 10/36 in those joints.

You actually need 49/56 which is what goes into the gearbox. There is a larger part of steel to meet the bearing, and then its 5mm going in. Once you remove this, you can verify this. The black female part does not come off the shaft.
