Rc bug has hit me again just wondering if I can upgrade my 8103 or is it just better to get a new spektrum transmitter.

Thanks in advance for any advice

If you can find one of these for sale, the answer is "yes, you can upgrade the 8103 to 2.4 GHz operation":

http://www.ronlund.com/rcheli-prod/SPMMSJR910.html

Would I recommend it today? Not really. Although the 8103 was a fine radio for its day (I still have mine, use it for the occasional plank outing), you would be much better off buying a new 2.4 GHz system, especially if you decide to venture into the world of flybarless helicopters. When trying to use most of today's flybarless controllers with Spektrum satellite receivers instead of the full-blown receiver, you'll find that many of those combinations just won't work with a transmitter using the DSM9 Air Module.

The conversion unit made sense several years back, but by today's radio standards, you lose a lot of potential by not buying a current model radio. Today's radios with their programming features run circles around the capabilities of the XP8103.

Go ahead and treat yourself to a new transmitter and receiver on 2.4 GHz. You'll be glad you did.

If you are familiar with the way the 8103 programming works, you'll like the JR and Spektrum systems currently on the market. If you're a bit adventuresome and want to learn something new, Futaba has some good stuff out there.

I have a 10X and a 9303 converted to 2.4 using the external module. They work perfectly for the intended purpose and knowing the limitations of the module. As mentioned before, if you intend to use the flybarless controllers without a main receiver then you might want to upgrade your radio. I'm using a BeastX with a main receiver and satellites and I've got no issues.

It was time I bit the bullet and upgraded to the DX8 radio. Now if I can only figure how to charge the battery outside of the radio.

DX8 is nice... you'll like it.

Charging outside the radio is easy. You just need the correct charger with the right charge lead. Myself i have no problem charging the stock battery in the radio. But if it's the lipo i might think about pullin it to charge..

JRjoe.....
