Furion 6 maiden, tail belt keeps jumping off tail pulley, help!
Maiden hovers in the back yard, no actual flying yet. Hovering and adjusting tail gain and lock. Suddenly start loosing power and tail authority. Immediatly land and find tail belt off the rear pulley. 4 Test hovers this has happened twice. I have the belt really tight, so much that it actually doesnt spin that free on the bench when I push the rotor by hand. Newer styl tail plates installed with pulley moved fwd of tail gear.

I dont get it, and I am not flying this heli with the tail belt coming off. It only happens when I move the rudder back and forth (quick stops). If I don't do quick stops it stays on. How can I fix this issue.

Helps and suggestions appreciated.
Rick

update: First belt has SNAPPED. I auto'ed it in with no damage to my Furion.

Replaced the belt with another brand new belt, cleaned off the burnt rubber. retightened belt, banjo tight, jumped off again next test flight with burned rubber on pulley and tail gearbox bearings (right side).

So, 2 brand new belts destroyed in 6 test HOVERS in the backyard.

Not happy.

help!

The only thing I can think of is when your putting a new belt on a Furion there is a pitfall. The motor shift sticks through the lower motor mount bearing. The belt MUST pass on each side of the motor shaft. Once belt is on and tight I always use a flashlight and check for this error. Never have spooled one up like this but it can't be good.

Oh, I looked at your photo...you had the belt tension about right. I can see a tiny bit of tail boom sticking out of tail case. That's where mine runs too.

My belt is tight, but not nearly as tight as you describe. Everything should spin fee when you turn the blades by hand. If not, it's too tight.

Loosen everything that holds the boom. Hang the heli (batteries and all) by the tail. Put a little more tension (not much) on the belt by pushing the frame and tighten up the tail tube. That's what I do. there is about 1/4 of play in the belt, yet everything rotates smooth, very smooth.

Are you sure the belts are only twisted a quarter turn?
Can you determine where you are getting resistance on the belt?
Are you sure you don't have both legs of the belt on the same side of the motors shaft? One leg should be on each side.

It sounds to me like the belt is not running smooth and is catching somewhere, so while it appears tight, there is slack somewhere.

I've tried looser, tight, and tighter. Not saying its so tight the head won't rotate, it does. It just rotates more freely when the belt is looser rather then tighter. I am positive it only has a quarter turn to the right as looking at it from the tail forward. I took it out 3 times and triple checked.

I have the smooth side of the motor bearing block facing down. I also have the motor bearing installed with the flange side up so it doesn't hit the belt. I also cut the motor shaft so it has no way of rubbing on the belt. Both belt idler pulleys in the front rotate freely. I did notice that the belt tends to ride on the lower part of the tail drive gear. Enough that the bottom of the belt is flush with the bottom of the tail drive pulley, I suspect that this is normal.

Not sure what you mean???

This is soooo pissing me off. I have put more then enough money into this heli and something like this, 2 belts trashed in 6 hovers is just rediculous.

I had the old plates, now the newer ones. My belt rides higher on the tail drive pulley and in the center of the idler pulleys. using the method I mentioned above, I am trying to get 5-6 pounds of tension on the belt when I tighten it. I know you've looked at hings, but something is a miss to go through two belts in 6 flights.

Resistance on the belt - can you look at the entire tail drive mechanics and see if the belt is pinched, rubbing, pressing against anything other than the 4 pulleys?

once the 3rd new belt is on your Furion check the point where the belt passes the motor shaft. The belt must pass on EACH side of the motor shaft. Nearly every time I put a belt on my Furion I had the use an Allen key to grab the belt and maneuver it so it passes motor shaft correctly. If it's not turning over smooth that's the 1st place to look.

Its all apart now, parts have been cleaned up. Being a helicopter mechanic that sh!t drives me insane. I have OCD with cleanliness and good working mechanics.

I did notice that the tail belt never rode in the center of the tail drive pulley, it always rode to the right side of the pulley which would explain why it rode over the side of the pulley, underneath the idler pulley and then got jammed on the side. I thought the belt riding on the right side of the pulley was normal due to the natural 1/4 turn twist of the belt.

Does yours run in the center of the tail drive pulley?

I cut the motor shaft flush with the bottom of the lower bearing so this would be eliminated.

On the front pulley, it rides on the high side of center. On the rear pulley, it is centered.Compass 7HV, Trex 550E

Mine is Low on the front, and right on the tail pulley.

How do I adjust the position ?

Are you running the stock tail drive gear or the speed up gear?

Stock gear, 105 tail blades, CHP tail fin. Not sure how to raise/lower the pulley. I'd have to look but I am not home now.Compass 7HV, Trex 550E

you don't have a shim under the tail drive gear or anything, do you?

I built it according to manual - if it called for one it's there. if not, then no. Again I have to look but i do not think so.Compass 7HV, Trex 550E

Rick,

I'm traveling this week but will be around on next weekend. I would be happy to meet up and take a look. I am sure between the two of us we can figure it out.

As for alignment on the tail pulley, I would think the tail boom alignment or tail side plate alignment (and thus tail output shaft alignment) would influence that. You could try tweaking the tail boom mounting blocks in the direction that would correct the alignment.

I will double check when I get home. I do know that the hub is installed with the dog head screw in the dimple.

The belt pully goes on the end with 1 dimple. Even if it was wrong I have no clue if this would cause the belt to jump over.
