super bright neon paint?
Hey guys, just curious. is there any such thing as extra/super bright neon paint. not the stuff in wal-mart. i'm talking about the kind that you can maybe still see just after the sun goes down. seems like right at that time everything just blends in together and looks black and its hard to tell at times what position the heli's at.

If you're flying after the sun goes down, maybe something like THIS would be a better option.

The problem with the super bright printed or painted anything is that they are very reactive to UV and will dull quickly. You might not notice it over the course of a Summer but paint something freash after about 6 months and you'll see immediately how much your original work has faded. If you want to fly at night or beyond dusk, there are some great LED options these days.

I tried to paint some neon orange on the tips of my main rotor blades on my 550, well I painted the orange on the tops of the blades and a regular yellow on the bottoms. The paint only covers about 3" from the blade tip inward. The reason for me trying to do this was simply to see if I could make the disc more visible when flying, at all times of the day not necessarily at night.
My findings are, the yellow on the bottom, cant see at all. The neon orange, makes the disc visible on spool up but once at full head speed cant hardly tell I even painted anything on it at all.

This suprised me on how little it made a difference. On my 130 and 250 I am running orange KBBD tail blades and they are quite visible in flight. I am interested to hear if there is something out there as well.

BTW the blades I painted were Edge with white ends.

I see white blades pretty well in flight. I've been running solid black MSComposit blades though and I have to watch my shins on spool down when I walk out to stop the blades. White against black blades is probably as stark a contrast as you will find. I think the orange on a black blade out at the end of a main blade is going to be hard to see due to tip speed and that both colors go black in shadows and at distance.

this is a cool topic. I would paint the cowl with neon colors and light it with led strips on the skids facing onto the canopy and disc underside, like some bill board lighting. You only need 2 strips of leds. You could have a day and a night canopy so the floressence of the neon paint doesn't fade from exposure to daylight uv/ir.

I flew at dusk and my eyesight couldn't make out my 450 orientation well at 50 yards, though I was looking into a sunset off to the right slightly also.

good luck, I like flying in my street lit driveway at night, the little rx, gyro, battery timer, leds all look great and orientation is easy.

Just tested a foot long 12v led light strip I bought for 14 bucks, freaking bright.

If you had UV LEDs you could use a product called clear neon. Look up clear eon on the web. The paint is clear until you shine a UV light on it. They have different colors. You could use the same canopy for day and night flying and have two different paint jobs.

Refractive silver tape - about a 2" wide on the main tips and 0.5" wide on the tail rotor tips makes highly visible disks in almost all conditions....except night....The older I get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.
