GY701 Issue
Anyone still flying with a GY701 I have a couple questions..

I set mine up properly did a trim flight in normal mode got it locked in etc... but I noticed hardcore whipping of the tail sometimes very inconsistent piroing.

Now I was not sure how to set the piro speed so I went into expert mode on in the gyro and changed the rate down to 600 deg/sec instead of adjusting the end points on my TX.. is that messing with it?

Synergy N5, Tail gain was at 50% 8fg radio

Tell me what headspeed, what main:tail ratio, what tail blades and length, what radius tail servo arm and what tail servo.

Ben

I was running 2050 rpm

93 or 94mm radix tails switching to 96mm rails

Align 620 tail servo

ball at 14.35mm out

not sure on the tail ratio I can count the teeth and see if its important..

I was hoping to keep this heli flybar, and thought I had the best gyro gov out there,,, if not I will put a cgy 750 on it..

Do you have it in 3D mode or F3C?

Thanks for the info. Truth is I still haven't tuned my 701 as I like it either. I started with it in F3C mode and lower gain (as I always set up my GY611's) in a new build and noticed inconsistent piro speed as well. Switched to 3D mode with much higher gain and the tail speed was way too fast/responsive for my smoother style flying, so I'm back to F3C but with the higher gain. This results in predictable tail control for me, but I don't have a final verdict on the piro speed yet.

I'll post my findings as I continue tuning. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to the advice provided.

3D was way to fast for me as well. I thought the heli was going to explode it would piro so fast thats why I went into the advance menu, and tried to tone it way down maybe I will try F3C mode as well

I would suggest trying a different tail servo, as maybe the one you have is flaking out. Two friends of mine recently had tail servos get whacky on them, causing similar issues. A new servo solved their problems.

Until you pair that gyro with at least a 9256 and preferably a BLS251 or BLS256 HV (depending on your power system), you are leaving a good 25% of its performance capability on the ground. Make sure the gyro is in 3D mode. It also helps to use CONSTANT versus FUNCTION in the rudder gyro expert menu. Default is the latter. The gyro will tolerate the better part of 10% more gain with the narrow frame rate Futaba servos, more still with the narrow frame rate BLS servos. The higher the gain, the more tightly the gyro can control the piro consistency.

A 750 will not change this issue. Its tail gyro is essentially identical to the 701's.

Dr.Ben what is the best way to change pyro rate? is the deg/sec way the best in advance menu?

Set the maximum desired piro rate in d/s with 100% rudder dual rate. 500 is a good place to start. If you need it slower for a given flight condition, reduce the rudder dual rate for that flight condition.

Those who are not using 3D mode simply because it is "too fast" are misadjusting the gyro. Both 3D and F3C modes have the ability to command the same piro rate if set to do so. Piro speed difference stems from the default maximum piro rate of 720 for 3D mode and 450 for F3C. Using default piro rate alone ss the basis for your choice denies you the appreciation of how the 701 and 750 handle piro consistecy and stopping behavior in one mode versus the other.

Depending on the tail blade length, tail ratio, and tail bellcrank ratio, servo arm radii anywhere between 12.5 and 15mm are acceptable. Lower electronic gain is to be expected when the ball is further put on the arm as the mechanical gain in the system is higher.
