Very nice flying. I'll bet he felt twice as tall as he is walking away after that flight.

But I agree. Way too close for spectators that don't understand the danger and are trapped with no where to run even if they did see it coming.

For Crying out loud they were under the canopy of the roof there! How much safer could they be! You can't build a 50' high fence the heli would still get over it, the crowd appeared to be well over 50' from where he was flying, that's about the distance to the pits of any fun fly I've been to! You really do have OCD don't you! I'm just glad you are not around where I live or I would have quit the hobby a long time ago! You sound like one of those Old Plankers who can't stand heli's!
The Kid did a great job of flying safe and well away from himself and anyone else! Can't you just give credit where its do without trying to pick it apart!!! Jeez!

+1 .... very nice flying.

The ANG landed a Black Hawk on the playground at my kids school last year. They got to check it out and watch it take off and fly away. (OMG, what if something had happened) I'm also guilty of taking them to an airshow where an F-15 was making his turns 300' over our heads, banked hard over on it's side so close you could easily see his helmet, it was awesome I'll also admit to taking them on rollercoasters and sometimes not yelling at them when I see them riding their bikes without a helmet. I'm probably taking too many chances, I should round them up and send them to their rooms with helmets and full pads just in case.

Supertoyz,
Everything you mentioned was/is done with your choice as a parent. You accept the risks. trod1965 chooses to let his young child fly large RC helicopters.

trod1965,
Perhaps this could all be put to bed if would answer these two questions:
1) Were the parents of the children in attendance advised of the demonstration and gave their permission for their child(ren) to attend?

2) Did the school administration approve the demonstration?

All,
I forwarded a link to this thread to a family member who is an elementary school principal in Oklahoma. He said there's no way this would have happened at his school because the school district would have had his head for two reasons. One would be putting the children in danger. And, two, liability.

He was impressed that a 1st grader could do that.

Wait till he's 18 and doing hard stop direction changes 2 feet from your face at warp speed. Then everyone will think it's the coolest thing they've seen.

Props to Ryan! Kid has a bright future ahead of him, hopefully he sticks with it and doesn't get distracted by cars and women, those two are a lethal combination.

Envy never smells pretty.

Actually neither the School or the ANG asked for my permission to land or take off a Black Hawk 300' away from my kids and I don't have a problem with it. When I was a kid I had a teacher that would put the whole class in the back of his truck to take us on field trips, I guess that shows how times have changed, and not necessarily for the better. According to the theme here I shouldn't let my son out of the car at the flying field. My wife is a teacher so I hear all of the stories of out of control, over the top parents who freak out if somebody mentions evolution or says Merry Christmas instead of Happy Holidays in the classroom. She even showed an educational program once in her class that had been DVR'd, to her surprise one of the commercials was for Trojan condoms (who would have thought to preview it for that) no surprise one of the parents found out and called to complain, really? get over it. I should probably go plug in my car, hug a tree and think of something new to protest.

Great job Ryan. I have watched all of your videos and watched you fly in person at home and in Alabama. You control that heli better than most older, experienced pilots that I have seen. I'm glad some of these people didn't see you fly inverted over that pond, because they would have probably called the game warden because you were inches away from the water and you were indangering the fishies!!!!

I hope to see you on front of a heli magazine soon so I can get your autograph to go along with my canopy that you signed.

I've known Ryan and his dad for a long time and I know that safety is always first in their minds.

Keep up the good work!

I think the answers to these questions are pretty obvious judging from the video: yes, and yes.

How much safer could they be!
Alot... And no need to build a fence. Have them stand behind the fence that surrounds the perimeter of just about ever school ive ever seen.
Any buffer between the kids and the heli is better then sitting the way they were with no way to evade a out of control bird. He may be in control, but nobody can control a possible mechanical issue. Not even you..

Also I was the first one to say he did a great job. The fact that it was done without better thought of safety takes nothing from his performance. Also look in my gallery, I fly helis just as you do.
I just think safety in this hobby is very important and at the top of my list.

man that kid can fly, good for him, I'm happy for him, at first I though it was fake and some one was flying for him..

as for the argument, trod has posted and (and as I know very well LOL) he has to take the bad with the good as in all posts..more than 1 child has already been killed by a RC heli, and in one incident it was very much the same situation, some one was flying for a bunch of school children and a child was hit and died 2 or 3 day later,, sO we do know it can happen again.. as a father it doesn't matter to me if it was Korea or the US, how many is enough ??
it's coming sooner or later, you know it, the government is going to put it's big green dirty nose in it sooner or later, and the hobby will then be regulated, better later than sooner

be safe
