G30 Maiden, what a LOUD !!!, and WHY does it vibrates like...
Excited about my friend's gasser, took it out yesterday for its maiden flight.

Double checked everything, set needles to its manual and added 1/8 turn open. The modified zenoah fired up on the first turn of the starter. WOW! Nice consistent idle

Walked it out spool up, and, OMG, I CAN NO LONGER HEAR A THING!
THIS MUFFLER IS LOUDER THAN A CLANDESTINE ROOSTER FIGHT GONE BAD.
IT DOES HAVE TONS OF POWER EVEN AT LOW RPM.

Sorry for the shouting, ears still ringing fom yesterday. I'm only turning about 1500 RPM (break in) but it feels very light on collective.

The engine is a bit rich. It went through the tank in about 12 minutes.
Noticed quite a lot of shaking in the ful tank, and the tail has a good skip that goes along with the engine note.

Is the tank shaking/foaming normal while the engine is rich or do I have to start chasing engine vibes?

and darn, this thing IS LOUD!

well if you have never flown a gasser then yes they can be loud, and the Century V mufflers are not very good at reducing noise...I heard a Zimmerman muffler run on a friends G20 at it was much quieter than my V2...

As for vibs caused by other than engines, when I purchased the TT upgrade I noticed that it had a "tight spot" when turing the tail rotor by hand....I could feel each gear tooth on the bevel gears meshing...it just felt way too tight for a TT. It took some hand work and dremeling to get everything good and smooth.

The truth of the matter is a gasser does vibrate a bit more than a nitro simply because of the larger displacement and torque the engine produces...now the RC format engine unlike the PUH in the G30 by what I can tell run smoother (cause of the heavier fly wheel mainly) but there is a slight weight penalty...unless you run a quality mod engine and matched tuned pipe.

So if the vibs seem a bit too much, I would go back and check alignments, gear meshes, balances and engine tune (after engine breakin).

LOL funny post,

RM, he didn't say what muffler, I'm betting it's square LOL,

MoneyPitVictim, what muffler ??
I'm only turning about 1500 RPM (break in)
there is "some" of your problem, get the HS up, say 1650, 1700, that should help some

RM3,
The tail felt ok smooth. This is a V2 G30.

Muffler:

Is the big shinny Torpedo Slim V2 (sounds like an adult toy description) muffler sold in combo with the PUH HWC 29cc engine.

It had an end baffle screwed at the end on the muffler, that unscrewed itself on the 1st minute of flight.
Funny, It made no diference on the LOUDNESS when it came off, the note changed a little.

Jim,
I'll get the revs up as you suggest.

Should I also screw that end cap back into the "torpedo"?

I don't run that small cap screw with the washer in the end of the V2...i determined that the best outlet "setup" during bench testing with a prop that for my G20 engine (it modded BTW) it ran the best with just the aluminum outlet reducer....

the 29cc may need somthing comletely different...it depends all on your setup like engine RPMs, HS...

I had looked online for what all those washers, reducers, inserts would do other than increase backpressure to some degree and there seems to be no published info on what the manufacturer recommends on how to set the outlet items up for any particular engine...

it comes down to your own testing and what works for your particular setup really.

^^^ yeeaa, I don't think the Century Reps are using the reducer on the larger engines, I didn't read much about it,

I don't know anything about a washer, unless you are referring to the flange on the reducer, yes I do use the reducer on my B H Hanson 20.

RM, on your stroker 20 you may get more power without the reducer

I only have the reducer, no washer or baffles. I put it back on for lack of better intuition.

So I raised the hover RPM to about 1700 and the tank is now glass smooth.

However

it is now picking a different vibration making the FBL erratic, and wanting to do the side death dive, not fun.

Im redoing the FBL mount to a different location and orientation. It "could" be a bad sensor, or just gasser vibes.

gassers...gotta love them huh...fix one thing only to get a surprize somewhere else.

I tried all the "settings" and the peak power came with just the outlet reducer for the engine to run in the 12000 to 13000 rpm range...which is where its currently running for my 1950 HS choice. once winter comes back and temps are below 60 I change my HS to 2050 or 2100 as the engine is being cooled better allowing for higher RPMs. Gassers seem to love the cold.

Yea had the same thing not fun.
Use a hard double side tape to mount it. Eliminates the problem any of the foamy stuff and you will get the FBL problems when you have vibes...

How was the fan run out ?
You say your rich so I would say it was not vibes from lean unless your miss hearing the setting. You set the gassers by temp more than by ear until you get real familiar and even then I go back to head temp as a back up to my intuition. The gassers sounds different for sure.

The end reducer should also come off it.

1st of all, thank you for the feedback!

On the flights I described the was unit as shown in the photo

been using two layers of the 3M grey super sticky tape I used on all my other units.

Im going to experiment with this location to see if is vibration or a sensor issue.

As for the fan run out, i'll get back to you on that. Not ready to drop that mother yet, AGAIN.

I see that you are using the angle braket for the gyro in the 1st pic...I would take a guess that was probably the reason you were having gyro issues....

Honestly I feel that plate is a sorry fix for forgetting to come up with a solid gyro mount (sorry Century, but you did F that up).

the bracket has a tendancy to vibrate up and down on its left side (looking at from top , from rear), if you have heavier gyro system mounted to it the worse it is. That mount really needs to be supported from both sides....not one side turning it into a tuning fork.

I made my own for the GY750 that sits on a thick aluminum plate between the rear frames right behind the elevator crank...this way if I ever have to take the tail off I don't have to tear the gyro off the plate every time. (theres a 2mm gap between the gyro sensor and the elevator crank BTW, it not touching)

Thats cool that the Heli command unit allows for any mounting position BTW.
As for the fan run out, i'll get back to you on that. Not ready to drop that mother yet, AGAIN.
+++I here you there....thats why I also went with tiny hex bolts instead of button heads that allow me to use a fast cordless screwdriver to quickly remove and replace them with a 5.5mm socket (grabs better)...those small button heads had a tendancy to strip out the hex hole in them.

Just hardmount the 3SX as shown in the second picture. Had a similar problem with my 3SX on a Radikal G20 and on suggestion of Raja I hard mounted it with a single layer of the 3M outdoor tape.

Has been flying problem free since.

(Thanks again Raja for the help!)

The one where it is on the side of the heli on the frame...
Just use 1 layer of the thin 3M tape.

g30 vibrations
As someone else suggested check your fan and fan hub for runout. Also check for clutch runout. For some reason Century has been shipping bad clutch shoes. I mean in that they wobble. I have bought three for my radikal g20 in three months, the first cracked at the expansion joint, i bought a replacement two weeks ago and it looked it had been machined by a 3rd grader. bought a replacement for that and got the same thing. I finally went to a machine shop and they helped me get it better but still not right. This causes the clutch bell to woble when the clutch shoe engages. This in turn causes a fair amount of vibration.
On your muffler issue i am using a hobby king 45.00 muffle on my g20 and it is extremly quiet. it is about as big around as a coke can but very effective. has a nice chrome finish.

This experience sounds similar to my efforts with a radikal gasser, only I bought three bad hubs and a machinist still couldnt resolve the last two properly. Nice to know Im not alone.

I leaned the needles yesterday, found it was extreemely rich.

We have now much smoother operation, tail was almost still with no wag or hesitations. Engine was not hot either.

However about 10 minutes into the flight the ugly appeared and the like glitch behavior began.
This has been typical on every flight, never in the begining, always after a few minutes. Both batteries still above the 7.6v range.

Swapping FBL units today...

Vibrations
My G20 (brand new 6 flights) has been vibrating so badly two tail boom support rods have snapped near the frame (in flight). The second break nearly cost me the heli as it hung straight down and would not let me land the heli....SOOOOO I feel your pain!

Gentlemen

The engine was redone and the hub and clutch runout is NOW down to less than .001in.

I am running out of things to swap. heli is running fairly smooth now, yet I still see glitch like pumps or twitches, only for a fraction of a second, but very typical after 5minutes or so into the flight.

I started this thread thinking the receiver may be experiencing RF from the ignition box:

https://rc.runryder.com/t735614p1/

How far do you keep your RX from the Ignition???

Do you isolate the ignition from the chassis? How?
