collector tank sucking air inverted
After doing almost a whole flight inverted when I landed I noticed my collector tank was almost empty. I just checked all the lines a few weeks ago so I thought I would try an upright flight and watch it. After an upright only flight the collector tank was its normal %90 full. The line is free and not kinked or stuck. I did notice that due to the geometry of the X50 tank when held upside down the clunk doesn't quite reach the top of the tank and if banked away from the inlet it is about 1/2 inch from the corner. There is no way around this. With the inlet being offset to one side and angled down the clunk won't reach the opposite upper corner. It might also be due to the fact that when upside down the muffler pressure tap is right below where the clunk would sit. It could be sucking air from the muffler pressure bubbling right over it. Putting the muffler pressure tap at the front of the tank would have prevented this.

I was wondering if anyone else noticed their collector tank sucking air on predominately inverted flights.

This was a really common problem with the original raptors. The angle that the clunk line entered, and the stiffness of normal fuel line prevented it from reaching the top of the tank when inverted. I switched to Hayes medium black tubing and due to the added flexibility, have not had a problem since. Be sure to cut .25" long because it swells when soaked with fuel.

I built my X50 this way from the beginning, so can't say whether its the same problem that the Raptors had.

I do use the Align version of clunk tubing which is about as stiff as wet spaghetti. I thought it was just a problem of length. When upright the clunk is almost touching the back of the tank. When I flip it upside down with the little bend it needs to make due to the angle of the inlet it doesn't quite touch the top. When you give it a slight bank towards the opposite side of the inlet it is nowhere near the upper corner just because of the inlet being to one side and the slight bend the tubing makes to bend back toward the top.

Are you saying by using a Hayes line your collector tank will stay full for an entirely inverted flight?

When you say its upside down the Clunk doesn't reach the top of the tank, how is that, the Clunk should fall with weight.

If your header tank isn't staying full, isn't that a main tank clunk issue?

Dont use wire to retain it. Cut some thin rings of fuel tubing and slip over the ends before you attach the line to the fittings. Havent had an air leak yet with this method...knock on wood.R.I.P. Roman

I use small nylon wire ties though when I have used the small wires that Sullivan provides, I've had no trouble with that either.
