Very Cool ! I saw this process on American Choppers a while back, no reason it wouldn't work on canopies.

Here is a link to DIY kits. Now I wonder if they will comeup with a way to create your own artwork with an inkjet printer.
If I can print my own patterns I am going to try this.

The presenter suks, but it is clear and looks easy. (Airbrushing looks easy too, but is not)

No doubt there is an art to this. That was an experienced hand applying that film.

heres a quick vid of a swirl pattern using the ink not the film. You can see them adding ink in specific spots. There are a few like this.It looks like you can do custom patterns using the ink

the crazy part is it took less than 3 min to apply that finish.

Hydrographics is cool, alot of fake carbon fiber and wood grain is done this way. Pay no attention to the "at home" or hobby or "getting started" kits. That stuff is always a gimmick. Yeah, you can do small parts but its half-assed and the quality is poor. I was looking to add hydro-graphics to my business but then learned that you must clear coat it to get it to be glossy and have a life span of more than a week. The film scratches easy if left uncoated. So, aside from having to put some large tanks in to dip larger parts, now you must invest in a spray booth, quality paint guns and invest time perfecting your process. The money you invest to do crappy parts at home, you might as well have just given the parts to a professional shop and let them do it. Powder coating is the same way.

Yes definately true about the clear coat. Its a MUST for any durabilty or for it to last, especially on something not decorative like a guitar, thats gonna take some hard wear in spots.

From what I have researched it appears that there are 2 kinds of "kits". A film that requires an activator and ink that you apply directly to the water to create patterns.Either way, if done right by someone with experience it looks cool.

Some of the snakeskin, animal print, and cammo ones I saw were REALLY cool looking

You forgot EPA inspection, county license, state license, special hazmat fees, wildlife protection agency fees, special disposal fees, Obama small business taxes, affordable health care taxes, etc...

Are you just spewing stuff or do you know something about this process? I would like to know if the activator or the process has any EPA or disposal issues. I see no reason why there would be any special licensing or the other stuff you write.

I am just "spewing stuff" based on what I found out about commercial powder coating work and things like chrome plating. The government involvement in any commercial endeavor requiring chemical usage and waste can be overwhelming.
A very simple example is the wooden ladder. Government requirements and rules on the manufacture of "wooden" ladders has made these type of ladders almost non-exsistant.

Well, I am partner in a swimming pool chemical company so I am well versed on government regulations, especially as the revolve around water hence my specific questions about EPA and disposal. I was looking for specifics about this hydro dipping process.
