Are 8717HV Servos as good as it gets?
I'm going to be getting some new servos before long, and there are so many available now that it has gotten confusing. Are the JR 8717HVs still the top of the food chain, or is there better out now? Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.

MKS
Ok, what is the advantage of the MKS over the JR HVs?

The regular 8717 servos are tougher than the 8717HV and they handle unregulated 2S lipos just fine.

I have four of them on my heli...unregulated 2S lipo and unregulated 2S LiFe.
I literally never use the word literally right.

Are 8717HV Servos as good as it gets?
No.

My issue with 8717 is the amount of backlash their geartrain have over a short time. This is where IMO Futaba has an edge, and Hitec titanium gear servos. No problem with 8717 or HVs power and speed. Mind, Im not a 3d stick banger, and all I do requires more precision than speed from a servo. (not like Futaba or Hitec lack any either)

Heard good things from MKS servos but never own a set.

I'd much rather have Futaba brushless. They don't get the great slop that the Jrs have, are quieter, and most of all don't have the high amp draws of the Jrs .

Not to say the Jrs aren't great, but I wouldn't be buying new ones when there are better options out there.

choices
Looks like I have it narrowed down to the 8917s, or the Outrage 9180s. It may be a tough pick between these. Not sure which way to go.

Futaba BLS 157 top of the food chain.
I have a 3D heli, I don't understand why it doesn't do 3D.

Outrage is a re-branded MKS servo. If you want tons of torque, gears that DON'T get sloppy, ultimate speed, go with the MKS HV servos.

I currently have the latest and greatest Futaba HV servos in my practice bird to compare to the MKS servos. The Futaba's were nice when new but go sloppy quickly. You can also feel the lack of torque during hard maneuvers, at least on a 90 bird. Plus they are very expensive.

JR servos feel great in the air and have the best warranty in the business but as mentioned above, they get sloppy fast and are ridiculously over priced in my opinion.

outrage and mks
So outrage and mks are basically the same thing right? Doesn't that mean I should just pick the one I get the best deal on?

I like the 8717s. I have been running 3 sets (standard version not the HVs) in multiple helis from 550s to 90s since they were released. I always run them in my favorite helis because I love the way they fly. After a few years beating them up, they have a bit of slop but its hardly more than some of my other helis running 9452s and another running 9451s. We have seen a few 8717s with plenty of slop at our field, but the servos were wrecked a few times each and it was actually the top plate causing the slop. After the tops of the servos were swapped, they felt like new again. I am sure this isn't always the problem, but I bet it gets overlooked quite a bit and dismissed as sloppy gears. Seems like everyone has different opinions about 8717s, but I have had great luck with mine. All 3 sets running 2s lipos without any problems.

There is a Pro at my field that has been running the newer all metal case 8717HVs since they were released. He beats that 90 up harder than anyone I know and his gears still have extremely little backlash after countless hard 3d flights over the past few years. We compared them to some of the other Futabas/Savox/Align servos and the gears were just as tight or tighter as any of the others we checked. If I had the money for some top of the line servos, it would be the all metal 8717s for sure.

I wouldn't buy any servo that is not brushless!

Also, my 8717s got sloppy way too quick. I never had that happen with Futaba or Hitec. I have some MKS is one heli now. They seem OK, but I was not impressed with the build quality! Just look at the cheap Chinese fastener compared to JR, Futaba or Hitec. Speaking of Hitec, they have some brushless servos now. I plan to use them in my next heli.

Interesting how gear slop development varies with model type. Nick Maxwell put over 800 flights on a set of BLS272HV's flying like everyone knows he does and only then was the gear slop becoming excessive.

I think it depends a lot on the bird you are flying. 500 class vs 90 class. Electric vs nitro etc.
