C rating opinions
Have a swift 550 with stock century motor, does it need larger than a 30c rating on 14.8??? Thoughts?

IMHO, no 550 should be run on 4S! 6S is about the minimum. Get the higher C rating you can get, otherwise you will just be replacing packs often.

Well I thought so but I was told that motor would only handle a 4s battery, I wanted to go 6s but did not want to fry it. Any thoughts there and thanks for reply. The motor is on my gallery if you would look at it, might not do any good tho. Thanks. There is no such thing as up, it's all out...

what style of flying are you planning for this heli? You might be ok with 30C and 4 cell.

From Century Site
•Speed Control: 50 Amp or better
Motor: 900-1250kv (based on battery)
•Battery: 4S-6S Li-Po or 12 cell NiMH or NiCd

•Main Gear: 96 Tooth
•Pinion: 8-14 Tooth
•Head Speed: 1600-2100 RPM

So it looks like it can run either 4s or 6s..
I would suggest going with the 6s and maybe 40c battery
The higher the voltage the less the amperage..
This would take you up to all but hard 3D

Good Luck,

What ESC and motor do you have? Not just "stock century motor" but exactly which one.

From all accounts I was told it was a 1450kv and the sc is for sure 85/100 all electron stuff. The only one I have found they have is 1450kv the other foes not look like the one I have. ??? Picture in my gallery. There is no such thing as up, it's all out...

Thinking about it I had a swift 16 some years ago and I ran the electron 4s on it. The battery got pretty hot and puffed. I'm assuming it was not able to supply enough current or the c rate was too small. Correct or not? I just hate to put a 6s on it and fry the motor and then crash the heli or at least have to buy another motor. There is no such thing as up, it's all out...

4S will fly it but it will kill the packs pretty regularly.

Make sure your ESC is capable of 6S and then get a 6S pack.
I would suggest a 3600-5000mAh 6S 40C.

You are correct by the way...The 4S in your old Swift was over worked by either the low C rating which bottle necks the current and makes heat or the pack voltage was too low and just couldn't supply the power needed.

Which is irrelevant....Just use a bigger pack.

The motor will be fine...It's the ESC you need to verify capability.

I've run 2S motors on 6S before...They just run faster.
An ESC on the wrong pack will go up in flames.

Cool, it's on in a couple weeks. It's a cheap heli, swift carbon 550 but it flies great for a fella of my level. I stick bang anyway so ya know there is lack of throttle management! Cheers! There is no such thing as up, it's all out...

Remember to ditch the pinion if it is already setup for 4s! You'll want to drop 2-3 teeth!

Can I also chime in about the whole series cell count vs. C rating thing, If you ran a 550 on 4s and used a single 5000 mah pack then yes it would strain the pack more than a 6s 5000 setup but im guessing most would do the wise thing and run 2x 4s packs of say 3300-4000mah in parallel, therefore you would have a 4s 6600-8000mah flight pack and therefore no need for high C rated packs (which are mostly a con anyway unless you buy TP packs)!
60% of the time, it works every time!
