where to get a box to ship a heli
Where is the best place to get boxes for shipping?

I'm thinking of listing my Raptor 30 airframe (and hopefully selling it of course).

I remove head/blades and flip the skids upside down and screw them back in place. Then if you go to UPS store they will custom fit you a box for it.

Post office has some boxes, Size of the box depends on how much you are breaking the heli down. I generally do as Olroy and also remove the boom.Bill Whittaker

Yes, that $27 is about right. I have shipped a pair of helis disassembled in a single large box I made by grafting several together. I double walled it with cardboard cut from other scrap boxes. Both UPS and USPS did a good job with it for under $30 each time. We actually used that same box and packaging material 3 times in a 4 for 2 trade between Indiana and New York. He shipped a NIB kit in it's own original box. Then my created big box went to NY with two helis to him. He sent a kit back to me in the big box and then I resent the big box with two more helis back to him. Try any of the convenience stores, auto parts stores, tractor supply stores, etc. Someone always has boxes.

Boxes
U Haul is good and you can also get bubble wrap and peanuts (I hate peanuts!!)
Also Home Depot and Lowe's both have boxes and some 1x Woodrow to reinforced with..
If it is a large scaler that I cannot remove much, I custom build a wood crate and have shipped Greyhound and motor freight ..

Be careful of some of the box sizes you can buy over the counter. Some tend to run outside in the large box dimensions and will cost extra money to ship. Always best to find a box size that its length + distance around is less the 84". If you happen to have get oversized boxe on you can modify them.

- Cut the 4 corners to the proper height
- Slice the inside with an xacton so you can bend the new flap.
- Once you get the flaps down trim them up as needed.

Fedex/ups ground tends to be cheaper on the larger packages then USPS unless its USPS parcel post which is a hit/miss on shipping times.

Make your own box it you can find a flat screen tv box. They are double wall thick and very strong. Duct tape the inside and packing tape on the outside. Also used hot glue on the flaps.
Break down heli, head, skids and boom. They all fit together if you wrap each item. Also install supports inside the box. Secure everything together and wedge it all tight. I took pictures of the few heli I've sold in the past under the folder Sold Items. Get the size from the Post Office. Once you go over a certain dimension the cost is a lot more. It's not the weight, it was the over all size that will cost you. Fully insured with signature was about $35.

I usually get my boxes from U-Haul. I buy a wardrobe box. Remove the blades, and sometimes landing skids. Wrap everything in bubble wrap and you're good to go. I've never had a problem shipping them that way. It's a complex, costly, glow powered anti-gravity machine!

I go to my local appliance retailer. One refrigerator box is enough cardboard to make any size shipping box and best of all, it's free.

You can't control the weight of the package very much as the heli weighs what it weighs. But you can control the size of the box when you make your own. The smaller the total box volume the cheaper the shipping costs.
The older I get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.
